Early exposure to HepB greatly increases the risk of chronic liver disease.

Despite ACIP’s recent vote to remove the universal birth dose, the Minnesota Department of Health supports giving all infants the HepB birth dose, following American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) & American Academy of Pediatrics guidance.

The MN Vaccines for Children program will continue providing birth doses.

Hepatitis B can have serious, lifelong consequences — and we can prevent it. The hepatitis B vaccine gives newborns protection right from the start. Learn more about Perinatal Hepatitis B: www.health.state.mn.us/diseases/hepatitis/b/perinatal/basics.html.

Removing the universal recommendation for Hepatitis B vaccination could result in thousands of chronic HepB infections, leading to severe complications like liver cancer and death. The AAFP strongly supports maintaining universal HepB vaccination at birth, and we call on CDC to ensure this safety net continues to protect newborns and life-saving protection remains the standard of care.
