The body, like nature (and as a part of it), has innate and sophisticated systems of communication. When something is out of balance, the body communicates in the best way it knows how, through emotions, recurring patterns, and symptoms.

Five Element Theory in Chinese Medicine is a framework in which to observe the delicate and powerful balance of energies in nature. Each element (earth, metal, water, wood, and fire) is related to an organ, an emotion, and a number of other correspondences like the seasons. The elements, like the seasons, are not separate, but are part of larger cycles of nature.

Do you relate to one of these more than the others? That element’s wisdom could help you connect to the messages your body is trying to send you.

A little bit of acupuncture humor for your Thursday. Seriously though, when I started studying acupuncture, it quickly took over every nook and crevice of my brain. Everything I observe in the world goes through a filter of Chinese medicine now 🥰

Hey 👋 I’m Madi, a clinical herbalist and acupuncture student.

Get to know me and my journey with Chinese Medicine.

Being of service to people in their times of deepest suffering, when they need healing the most, is an immense privilege which I don’t take lightly. 🙂‍↔️

This is why I do all I can to honor the lineages I study and do my very best for every person who walks into the treatment room. 🌀

Your time and energy are valuable, and you deserve a health practitioner who sees you for all that you are, without judgment or unchecked biases.

I’m not taking student acupuncture patients yet, but you’ll be the first to know when I do… 💌

And in the meantime, if there’s anything you want to learn more about in holistic health and Chinese Medicine, drop a comment or DM me. ✨

Libra moon mood board + acupressure and herbs for the full moon 🌕💓🌹

Let the “still waters run deep” energies of this full moon help you tap into the fierce protector of your heart.

Deep healing work is raw and aesthetically unpleasing - the very opposite of what society expects us to be.

What if your next crash out was met with self-compassion instead of shame?

The time you spend with yourself, patiently processing through and releasing trapped pain within your cells, is *yours*. It can be as messy as it needs to be, what matters is that you show up for yourself.

Crying in the shower, rocking your body gently to help your nervous system relax before bed, and screaming to loud music in your car can help release tension and open the door to deeper processing.

Massaging the acupuncture point Pericardium 6 for 2-3 minutes in a clockwise motion, as well as working with herbs like rose, cinnamon, and hawthorn may help support the energetic healing that is needed now.

✨Always be cautious when working with herbs, and consult your medical provider before taking any new herbs, especially if you’re on any medications.

Did you know that emotions can be a cause of disease in Chinese medicine?

Anger, joy, sadness/grief, worry/pensiveness, fear, and shock all affect how our energies flow in the body in different ways.

Each emotion also correlates to an organ in TCM, so too much or not enough of a specific emotion can also lead to imbalances.

Emotions have powerful effects on the body, so take care to nurture and feel your feelings fully as they arise.

Bioregional, or the plants that grow around us, often appear exactly when we need their medicine.

Here in central Florida/gardening zone 10a, plant allies like bidens alba, greenbriar smilax, and tropical chickweed/drymaria cordata grow abundantly this time of year. These herbs have actions like clearing lingering cough and supporting the immune system with antiviral properties, clearing Heat and supporting the joints, and supporting the lymphatic system. They can help us kick out the funk that may be lingering from the winter season, and support us as the weather fluctuates from cold and damp to hot and damp.

Also, bidens alba and tropical chickweed make awesome pesto. 🙂‍↕️

These are just a few examples of bio regional plants where I live; I encourage you to get to know the plants where you are. Developing relationships with the food and medicines that grow around us can lead us into deeper reciprocity with the land. This kind of connection is what we need to remember while the world is in turmoil.

Step outside today and remember that medicine and magic are all around us.

‼️ Before you start wild crafting, make sure to follow best practices for foraging and engage in reciprocal relationship with the land. Clearly identify the plant through a legitimate resource before consuming, and be cautious to avoid poisonous lookalikes. Be safe out there!

Chinese medicine has astounding accuracy in connecting seemingly unrelated symptoms into a nuanced array of patterns and energetic types that were developed over thousands of years. Connecting someone’s lifestyle, their constitution, and observing the delicate and complex interplay of energies within them blows me away every time.

According to Chinese Medicine, the spirit (Shen) governs consciousness, mental activity, and has a close relationship with the Heart.

When there is harmony, there will be mental clarity, emotional stability, spiritual connection, and creativity.

When the spirit/Shen is disturbed, through circumstances like trauma, prolonged worry, or grief, it is unable to stay anchored in the Blood. There may be dream-disturbed sleep, palpitations, mood swings, emotional disturbances, insomnia, inappropriate laughter, mania, dizziness, forgetfulness, a line or crack on the tip of the tongue, a red tip of the tongue.

Some ideas for helping to anchor the spirit include:
Foods and herbs that calm the spirit, like jujube dates and goji berries, neutral and cooling foods like oats and cucumbers
Determine any food intolerances
Somatic therapies like acupuncture, EMDR
Adequate rest
Social support
Counseling
Grounding movement like walking barefoot outside, Qi Gong

Note: this is not medical advice and is intended for educational purposes only.

Does your spirit/Shen need some extra love?

EDIT: Re-uploaded to actually include the slide that lists the values I practice 🥲

In light of everything going on in the world, it’s so important to discern who you can trust with your Spirit. Here is a reminder of some of the values I hold dear as an herbalist/healer 🫶

How do you stare into the belly of the beast and choose to live authentically anyway?

It’s not easy, and everyone’s individual expression will look different.

Some common threads, energetic and tangible:
Compassion for self and others
Emotion regulation and shadow work
Assessing how to access personal and familial safety based on intersections of identity
Community-building to keep a light going as things get worse
Showing up for our marginalized neighbors and community members
Preserving and transmuting energy to persevere through the next years
Directing blame to the people in power instead of each other
Calling on ancestral practices to remind ourselves of human resilience
Care as a priority

How are you showing up? What care practices will guide you through the next several years? I invite you to explore these questions with earnest, compassionate intention.
