Wondering what I pack into a postpartum visit after your birth? One thing I often do is make sure mamas are well fed. Especially if you have other children in your home it can be difficult to find a moment for yourself to snack, let alone snack on something nourishing. I love whipping up a few quick snack containers during our visit. Boring and forgotten seeds and nuts in your pantry get mixed with cut up dried fruit and maybe even chopped dark chocolate from your secret stash! These little snack boxes end up feeling like a little luxury and are usually way tastier than your run of the mill trail mix. Snack with confidence knowing I try my best to find nutrient packed and delicious things that have been hiding in your cupboard. Delicious, guilt-free, and no trip to the store necessary. 🙌

This mama was an absolute warrior! She labored with such grace for many hours to bring her baby earth-side.

“Our little Halloween baby made her way into this world at 5:19 a.m. on Sunday and our world has forever been changed.

I have never felt so empowered in my life after delivering my daughter. Having an all natural labor was the biggest mental, physical, and spiritual journey I have yet to endure. I can easily say I would not have been able to stick to it without the amazing support of my midwives, Doula, and of course, my incredible husband.

When I first found out I was pregnant I quickly decided I did not want to be in a hospital setting and when I found Bella Vie, they fit everything I was looking for to an absolute tee. I had a vision to have a water birth and be able to bring up baby girl in my arms and they all helped me see that vision through.  It was not easy, labor took forever to progress despite the consistent intensity and a few times I remember thinking “I should just ask to be transferred, I cannot do this anymore.” But it's really amazing what the female body can do and continue to endure, so I buckled down and battled and ended up with the most perfect birth for me. The lights were dim, candles surrounding, acoustic music in the background, with my support team around the tub to encourage and assist as needed. By the grace of God, I was able to fight to see this vision come full circle and will forever be overwhelmingly grateful.”

This is something that comes up again and again whenever I have conversations with new mothers, and with mothers doing it for the second and third time, mothers of small kids, big kids, teens, etc.

The myth of the perfect mother is so deeply embedded into our collective psyche; the nurturing goddess who heals all ills and has no needs herself, who has all the answers, maintains a perfect home, whose children never cry or make a nuisance of themselves (anyone clocked side eye when feeding in public or comforting a melting-down toddler??)

She’s always calm, always serene, excellent at all the jobs of motherhood, always able to find time for her partner and her friends, never cries in the bathroom alone, never discusses her birth story or shares how hard it is (cos isn’t she lucky to have a healthy baby?), manages to navigate work and motherhood perfectly, has a baby who sleeps in a cot and breastfeeds easily.. in short, she meets the “ideal”.

Can you see how corrosive and damaging this is? Holding mothers up to this kind of impossible ideal? It isn’t achievable.

Have you fallen into this thinking? Have you thought this way about others?

How can we change this?

My home workspace. I can focus better when I have a peaceful environment to work in. As a doula, I know the importance of the atmosphere around you. Whether it’s your workspace or your birthing space, you should be able to set it up the way you want in order to feel at peace, productive, and safe. My space really just came together with the addition of this beautiful painting by Rachel Wood, fine artist. Swipe for a closeup. The scene painted makes me think of either a plain with mountains in the distance (a goal that I’m on my way to meet), or an approaching wave about to crest (the push and pull of labor contractions). What a perfect mixture of imagery for my productivity and for my line of work. Go check out her page for more serene imagery.
