Shelia Rhodes, a resident at Helia Healthcare of Salem, is glad to be going home after being gone from her home nearly 5 months. The beginning of May 2025, she was airlifted by helicopter from Salem, IL hospital to Belleville, IL hospital, where she was hospitalized for approximately 1 month with 8 of those days being sedated and on a ventilator. Following her stay at Belleville, IL hospital, she arrived at Helia Healthcare of Salem where she received physical and occupational therapy services.

She required assistance with functional mobility, toileting, bathing, dressing, & overall activity tolerance due to weakness. On August 24, 2025, Shelia walked for the first time following 3 months of not being able to stand up on her own or walk. Her treatment plan at Helia Healthcare of Salem included improving her confidence & independence with ADL through therapeutic exercises/activities, self-care training, balance training, gait training, & compensatory strategies. Therapy also provided education & home modification recommendations to ensure a safe return.

Shelia happily returned home on September 24, 2025, where she will get to spend time with her family and enjoy being home. Way to go Shelia for all your hard work!
