We have had a few people ask why we no longer raise and sell turkeys for Thanksgiving. The truth is: COST.
The cost of turkey poults in 2020 were $7 each they are now $19.95 each.
Organic Turkey Feed in 2020 was $13 per 25lb bag it is now $25.99.
So let’s do some math:
The minimum amount of birds to order for shipping is 10.
10 poults @ $19.95 each = $199.50
Each turkey will consume approximately 75lbs of feed in 24 weeks.
$25.99 x 3=$77.97 Feed per Bird
$77.97 x 10=$779.70 Total Feed Cost
$779.70 + $199.50 =$979.20 Total Cost
$979.20 divided by 10 = $97.92
$97.92 is how much it costs us to raise each turkey. That’s without any heat lamps, time, fencing to protect from predators (electric netting), water system, shelter or any profit what so ever.
We raise animals organically and ethically and we refuse to alter our ethics or beliefs for profit. Unfortunately sometimes that means we can’t offer certain things to our customers. For now…..sadly, that’s turkeys.
