My name is Manuel Lemus and this journey started for me in 2014, when I was first diagnosed with kidney disease. Since that time my Nephrology team have treated me with numerous medications in attempts to delay the progression of this horrible disease, I have made it my life’s mission to manage this disease as best as possible. However, no amount of dedication was able to prevent the progression of this disease and I was ultimately told I would require frequent dialysis treatments in order to stay alive. Over the past year and a half since starting dialysis, I have always tried to remain hopeful one day I might be free from these treatments that often leave me feeling more ill and exhausted than I did before the treatment started, but they are now life sustaining for me and I refuse to give up hope. It has only been through the support of my wife, family and God that I continue to have the strength to carry on. I was informed by my transplant team that regardless of my diligence of meeting all of the organ recipient requirements I will likely be on the transplant list for five years or possibly longer waiting for a donor. They have suggested that I reach out to those in my community by any means in hopes that someone may consider being a living organ donor. Unfortunately, multiple immediate family members have been disqualified from being a donor match due to preexisting medical conditions of the prospective donor.
I realize this is a remarkably intimate topic, one that shouldn’t be considered lightly, but if you find yourself inspired and willing to be donor or help share this message with others, my family and I would be deeply indebted to your kindness.
