❌5 common mistake for new meditators to avoid

1️⃣ Assuming There’s Only One Way to Do It

There is no one-size-fits-all version of meditation.
It can make all the difference in the world to find the right meditation techniques for you

2️⃣ Expecting an Idealized Experience

Often there is an expectation for what should be happening for us when you meditate, based on other people's experience.

But meditation is a journey. It is a skill that’s developed over time, not a single-point destination.

3️⃣ Giving Up Too Soon

Often a new meditator gives up too soon.
Beginning meditators can benefit greatly from adding some discipline to their practice.
Use a meditation timer to help you keep your commitment to practice for a set amount of time.

4️⃣ DOn't IgnorE Your Body

There are things you can do to properly prepare our bodies for meditation.

Some light stretching can benefit the body and the mind for meditation.

5️⃣ Chasing the Bliss
Chasing a single blissful event limits what you can experience in meditation.

Meditation can shine a light on our mental tendencies. It’s not always comfortable, but it can be quite powerful. Be open to experience whatever arise in your practice.

Yesterday we shared a short tutorial on how to execute the standing forward fold. Another excellent option for tight hamstring relief is the seated forward fold, which allows the participant to take pressure off the spine. If only one hamstring is tight, you can do the above seated stretch with just the target leg extended, and the other leg folded in. Swipe to learn how to do this seated hamstring stretch.

Whether you run, bike, or sit all day (or maybe you do all three!) your hamstrings might get pretty tight. Located at the back of our upper legs, hamstrings are important because they help to bend our knees and extend our hips. However, running, cycling, and sitting for long periods of time can cause your hamstrings to start to feel a little rough. Luckily, yoga offers many options to help you to work through some tension from your hamstrings. While I recommend a planned series of regular strengthening and stretching work for your hamstrings, if your hamstrings are feeling tight today, there are a few quick poses that you can try to release that tension. Let’s begin with a standing forward fold: swipe to see how to execute this stretch.

The lower back can be a sensitive spot for many people, which means lower back stretches should make up a key part of your stretching routine. The cat Cat/cow stretch helps you get familiar with what your neutral spine is—not too arched and not too rounded—which can help improve posture. It also allows for a nice flexion and extension of the spine. Save this post for a yoga stretch you can use to give your lower back some love.

While a stiff neck is typically caused by muscle strain or ligament sprain, the painful flare-ups can feel like a minor injury. In order to minimize painful movements and give a stiff neck some rest, it is key to keep the neck moving and avoid further stiffening or muscle deconditioning. Here is a quick and easy stretch to relieve muscle strain in the neck.

Our calves are one of the most important muscles. They are always working. As we age, we lose balance and mobility. If a calf is too tight, this can not only be painful but can greatly impact your knees and your whole body. This can cause injury over time, sidelining you from your favorite activities or even keep you from walking, without pain.
Tightness or pain in the calves is usually the result of overuse or poor postural alignment. Activities like running and playing sports (and yes, even yoga), can be hard on your calf muscles. However, with proper stretching we can relax muscles and increase mobility! Swipe for 3 simple steps to prevent injury and make your calf muscles happy!

Flexibility allows you to move freely and comfortably in your daily life. The key is knowing which stretching technique is most effective for your routine. Swipe to read about three different types of stretching techniques.

Everyone can benefit from regular stretching. Here’s 5 reasons why stretching is important:
1. Stay injury free. Stretching can help you keep doing the things you love. It can also prevent decreased mobility as we age.
2. Increase your range of motion. Being able to move a joint through its full range of motion gives you more freedom of movement.
3. Decrease stress. Strengthening and stretching specific muscle groups can reduce musculoskeletal pain and increase optimal alignment. You also get endorphins from stretching. It just helps us be better and feel better.
4. Prevent back pain. A stretching routine can also help prevent future back pain by strengthening your muscles and reducing your risk of straining them.
5. It just feels good! Stretching has been shown to increase serotonin levels, the hormone that helps stabilize our mood, and overall makes us feel good.
