What it looks like at Sego Birth Suite to be in go-ready-mode at night. 😍

My thoughts on hiring a CPM. Did you know I am one of only nine CPMs licensed in Wyoming? We are primarily traveling to and for home birth.

Come set up Sego Birth Suite overnight with me. We have a woman in early labor and I had a feeling it could be smart to head in and ready the place and rest there rather than have the notorious midwife cortisol spike from a 1am birth call to my home and need to drive real fast in. I always wondered what it might be like to have eight of me, to get it all done.

Midwives Heather and Nicole train birth assistant Sierra blood draws. She did amazing! Heather wanted to pull her own Vitamin D so used the opportunity for a teaching moment! Heather used to be a passer-outer with these but then she got better handling it after she learned to do them herself. She needed the mystery removed to tolerate it.

In your 20s you will have a hospital birth followed by a life changing home birth. A midwife college will offer you full ride tuition in exchange for business consulting to their board. It is very important too say yes. The open a birth center 20 years later.

Every year I look forward to publishing our stats, namely transfer stats.

This year the two surprising and rare emergent transfers in labor were for cord prolapse & non-reassuring fetal heart tones. Both women had histories of normal homebirths. Both had happy outcomes. This is what you hire us for.

While around 1/3 of our population has elevating normal blood pressures in late pregnancy, we had 2 risk out this year ahead of active labor for wandering into PreEclampsia territory. Our regs and care for safe outcomes do not permit us to continue on with these cases. One woman risked out for breech at term, electing surgical birth. Some women with histories of PreE return to us in future pregnancies with a resolve to overhaul nutrition & lifestyle to prevent adverse health and birth outcomes and we have pulled off future births with no issues. This is a pesky clinical picture with 1-2 women risking out annually for metabolic dysfunction in the practice.

We had 5 (not 4) first time birthers elect hospital transfer in early or non-active labor for clinical exhaustion, pain management, labor augmentation by docs. This was typically in the 0-5cm space over 12-30 hours of labor which is considered ‘early’ labor. As midwives we want to be sure we are preparing women prenatally for the mental and physical demands of labor and eduction on the normal phases of labor to reduce these numbers. Compared to the North American stat on this from a BMJ study in 2005 that suggested 1:4 (25%) first time women planning OOH birth will wind up in hospital anyway, we are doing very well at 10% with this stat. Experienced professional Doulas, childbirth education courses, self education & RADICAL PRIVACY tend to keep first time birthers out of this territory.

We are grateful for a fun and incredible year with most of our client base elated with their experiences and turning into life long friendships. We sacrifice normal lives to take call and offer this work. We are in it for the women and the transformations. And for what we offer outside institutional maternity, for women who choose to show up for themselves. 🎊🥂🌸♥️

Crazy quote of a hospital birth cost. After posting this story, another DM came in that a current client’s normal vaginal birth two years ago was $20,000!!! You are subsidizing their medical mal practice policies and keeping the lights on in the entire hospital! L&D is the biggest revenue generator of most hospitals. 🛑 paying this crazy fee for a highly invasive institutional birth unless you know you want a surgery! The evidence shows out of hospital birth in North America is a safe option for low risk women - which you should presume you are until you are not. This economy is crazy challenging right now, but we have the most women on our books than ever. This is a smart prudent economic decision. We give highly individualized care. There is also something to fully feeling this experience.

So fun to read feedback like this from a young woman I caught three babies with. My women become surrogate daughters and friends. Thank you for filling my cup and my heart with your kind sentiment. So meaningful. ♥️🌸

I love every opportunity for birth and midwife-assisted birth to reach women, especially in places with poor legislation like New York State. We think more New York women should destination birth in Utah. Did you know that more Utah women choose midwife-assisted births at home or birthing centers than any other state in the U.S.? Why? Because our legislation is generous and medical providers at the large hospitals are collaborative and respectful. Come to Utah!, she said. Let us show you how we normalize birth here.
