Ah yes, the eternal medical coding paradox 🎭

Boss: “Speed up! We need more charts coded!” Also Boss: “Why did we get a denial? You need to be more careful!”

That feeling when you’re supposed to be both The Flash AND Sherlock Holmes at the same time 🏃‍♀️🔍

Real talk: Quality takes time. Those ICD-10-PCS procedures aren’t going to code themselves accurately at warp speed. (Though having instant access to all 2025 codes doesn’t hurt 😏)

How many times this week have you heard “just code faster but don’t make mistakes”?

Brrr!! During these winter months it may feel like you have frostbite and might take a minute to warm your fingers and toes 🥶

Frostbite is when the skin and the tissue just below the skin freeze. Frostbite mostly affects small, exposed body parts such as fingers and toes.

After rewarming, the skin will be discoloured and blistered, and will eventually scab over. If the frostbite is superficial, new pink skin will form beneath the discoloured skin and scabs. The area usually recovers within 6 months.

The diagnosis code is T33.90XA

Ingrown toenails can be incredibly painful and sometimes debilitating.

An ingrown nail occurs when the skin on one or both sides of a nail grows over the edges of the nail, or when the nail itself grows into the skin. Redness, pain and swelling at the corner of the nail may result and infection may soon follow. Sometimes a small amount of pus can be seen draining from the area.

To treat severe ingrown toenails a Matrixectomy is performed. This procedure is used to remove the problem portion of an ingrown toenail and to prevent the ingrown toenail from recurring. Matrixectomy is performed under local anesthetic, and requires only a few minutes to complete.

The procedure code for this is 11750; Excision of nail and nail matrix

We see TAVR accounts every single day, our heart is one of the most looked at organs 🫀

Transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) is a minimally invasive procedure that is done when a patient needs to replace a narrowed aortic valve that fails to open properly (aortic valve stenosis).

In this procedure, surgeons insert a catheter into the leg or chest and guide it to the heart. A replacement valve is then inserted through the catheter and guided to the heart.

A balloon is expanded to push the valve into place. Some TAVR valves are self-expanding.

A TAVR procedure takes about 90 minutes. In 2019, TAVR became the most common method to replace the aortic valve, with 72,991 TAVR procedures compared to 57,626 surgical valve replacements.

Staph (staphylococcus) infections are An infection caused by bacteria commonly found on the skin or in the nose. Staph can be spread person-to-person and is very contagious 😷

The cause of a staph infection is staph bacteria entering the body. They can enter through an open wound or when a person ingests food that has become contaminated with the bacteria.

Staph bacteria might enter a person's body as a result of them: picking or scratching at pimples, sores, or bumps on the skin 😳

This infographic shows some common skin symptoms that could come with a staph infection

If an item becomes lodged in the airway or esophagus, a laryngoscopy or bronchoscopy would be performed

A laryngoscopy is when a doctor uses a special camera to look down the throat to see the voice box (larynx) and vocal cords.

Pneumonia, we’ve all had it at least once 🤒

Pneumonia is an infection that inflames the air sacs in one or both lungs, which may fill with fluid or pus.

The infection can be life-threatening to anyone, but particularly to infants, children, and people over 65.

Pneumonia is mostly spread when people infected cough, sneeze or talk, sending respiratory droplets into the air. These droplets can then be inhaled by close contacts 🤧

Corns and calluses are thick, hardened layers of skin that develop when the skin tries to protect itself against friction or pressure 😖

They often form on feet and toes or hands and fingers 🦶🖐️ If you're healthy, you don't need treatment for corns and calluses unless they cause pain or you don't like how they look.

Did you know; calluses occur more often and build up faster on the feet of people with diabetes!

A craniotomy is a surgical operation in which a bone flap is temporarily removed from the skull to access the brain.

This procedure would be performed in cases such as
