As someone living with tinnitus himself, STRONG STAR investigator and UT Health San Antonio faculty member Dr. John Moring focuses his research on better understanding the disorder and finding ways to treat it. This article from a past issue of Future, a publication of the UT Health San Antonio Long School of Medicine, describes those research efforts, including tinnitus' common correlation with posttraumatic stress disorder. To learn more about a current treatment study led by Dr. Moring for military and veterans in San Antonio with PTSD and tinnitus, see the comments. https://magazines.uthscsa.edu/schools/2024/12/09/taming-tinnitus/

Tinnitus affects 50 million people in the U.S. and is the leading service-related disability among U.S. veterans. It affects 60% of those who served in Iraq and Afghanistan. Because there is no cure, many think there is nothing that can be done to help. But cognitive-behavioral therapy is one known way to help manage symptoms. See the comments for information on a STRONG STAR clinical trial at UT Health San Antonio for military & veterans affected by tinnitus & PTSD.

We had an outstanding poster session at the San Antonio Combat PTSD Conference on Monday evening, and this morning, the second day of the conference started off with the presentation of the Dr. Abby E. Seifert Memorial Student Poster Awards. The awards, which recognize excellence in student-led research efforts, also memorialize Dr. Seifert for the inimitable impact she made during her 11 years with STRONG STAR and her unrelenting support of students. Congratulations to this year’s award winners: Hannah Baker in the undergraduate student category and Remco van Ziderveld in the graduate student category. We were honored to have members of Dr. Seifert’s family with us to present the awards.
