There is nothing more exciting to me than treating life threatening food allergies!
Meet Paige!
Paige is a beautiful 13yo girl who experienced an anaphylactic reaction after eating a cookie at a friends house. She immediately felt her throat closing and luckily wasn't far from home. She ran home and her mom got her to the ER just in time for life saving epinephrine injection.
Paige learned that the cookie was a peanut butter cookie and testing confirmed peanut snd tree nut allergy. She completed a treatment called oral immunotherapy for peanut and pecans/walnuts. A series of escalating doses until she passed a final challenge. She has to take a daily dose of nuts which she doesn't love but does it because she knows it's helping her.
So excited to say that Paige's lab work today shows her peanut and pecan and walnut are almost UNDETECTABLE!!!!
As the first allergist in San Antonio to offer OIT, this just does not lose its excitement!!!
Congratulations Paige!!! Keep up the good work!!!

October is Eczema Awareness Month. Eczema, also called atopic dermatitis, is a common chronic skin disease that usually starts in early childhood. One of the main symptoms of this condition is very itchy and dry skin. The skin becomes inflamed, red, irritated and scaly.
40 percent of children with atopic dermatitis have foods exacerbating their skin. Call me for an appointment and testing! 210-499-ITCH (4824)

5 facts about penicillin allergy from CDC:
1. Approximately 10% of U.S. patients reported having an allergic reaction to a "penicillin class" antibiotic in their past. However, less than 1% of patients were truly allergic.
2. A penicillin allergy label can prompt a clinician to prescribe second-line broad spectrum antibiotics that may be associated with suboptimal antibiotic therapy, increased risk for antimicrobial resistance or other adverse events, and higher healthcare costs.
3. Patients may have an inaccurate penicillin allergy label based on a past history of viral rashes, a family history of penicillin allergy, or intolerance to an antibiotic (e.g., diarrhea).
4. A true penicillin allergy may cause either an immediate hypersensitivity reaction (IgE-mediated, resembling anaphylaxis) or a delayed hypersensitivity reaction (resembling a severe rash or causing organ and blood cell injuries). For immediate hypersensitivity reactions, penicillin allergy-specific IgE antibodies may decrease over time resulting in patients tolerating penicillin-related antibiotics later in life.
5. Clinicians can evaluate a penicillin allergy label through different methods, including reviewing a patient's allergy history and conducting a validated risk stratification, followed by penicillin skin testing and/or a direct oral challenge, as appropriate.

Hi there, I’m Dr. Patricia Dinger and this is my team. Together, we have been treating entire families for eight years. Located in San Antonio, we see patients at two locations - Stone Oak and Schertz. My team and I pride ourselves in providing patients with the compassionate and skilled care they deserve. As a specialist and Board Certified in Allergy and Immunology, I am specially trained to diagnosis and treat seasonal allergies, food allergies, and insect allergy, as well as, asthma and recurrent infections. My goal is to keep you in the best possible health - feeling well and productive - while on as little medication, possible. My team and I will find what works for you. We will spend time with you, learning about your health history to ensure you receive the best care.
In 2015, I became the first Allergist in South Texas to offer Oral Immunotherapy to treat peanut allergy. Since then, we have successfully treated over five dozen children with peanut allergy! Today, these patients, who once could not be around peanut, are living around and eating it, with little to no risk. Seeing such success with peanut OIT, I added OIT for nut allergy, wheat, and milk, in 2018.
I am humbled to be a four-time recipient of the Super Doctors award.
I am also a mom to four children, whom I adore. I work as a representative with the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America and am a strong supporter of FARE’s Teal Pumpkin Project. You will find my team and I out and about at local festivals each fall helping to educate and inform our community about food allergies and the need for understanding, compassion, and inclusion.
I always tell my patients, there is no reason to suffer or feel miserable when you have allergies. There are so many recent advancements and treatments helping people every day. Let us know how we can help you find the right solution for you!
