Since 1963, Methodist Healthcare has continuously evolved to meet the growing needs of the greater San Antonio community. Our commitment has never wavered in consistently improving the health and wellness of our community by living our mission of "Serving Humanity to Honor God by providing exceptional and cost-effective healthcare accessible to all." Methodist Healthcare is a 50-50 co-ownership between Methodist Healthcare Ministries of South Texas, Inc., South Texas’ largest non-public funding source of community health care for uninsured patients, and HCA Healthcare, the nation’s leading provider of healthcare services. This creates a unique partnership that ensures Methodist Healthcare Ministries continues to benefit the community by providing quality care to all and charitable care when needed. Methodist Healthcare invested $818 million in charity and indigent care to the community in 2022 alone. With 30 facilities, including ten hospitals and eight freestanding emergency departments, the Methodist Healthcare team is comprised of 12,500 employees, making the system the second largest private employer in San Antonio. With more than 3,500 credentialed physicians, Methodist Healthcare provides the region's largest array of medical services, including neurosurgery, cardiovascular services, oncology, and women’s services.

We are proud to expand our cancer care services at Methodist Hospital | Specialty and Transplant with the introduction of an advanced nuclear medicine treatment for patients with metastatic prostate cancer who no longer respond to chemotherapy or other medications. This innovative therapy is a six-week process consisting of six injections and has shown promising results in improving patient outcomes.

Leading this advancement is a specially trained physician, Brandon Childers, MD, and nuclear medicine technician, Mayela Guerra—the first and only professionals in San Antonio to receive this specialized training, with our physician also being the first to achieve certification. Their expertise ensures safe handling of pharmaceuticals and precise monitoring using a nuclear medicine imaging system.

This advancement reflects our commitment to excellence and innovation in healthcare—providing hope and cutting-edge treatment options only available within our healthcare system. “It is a privilege to be the first to introduce this to our San Antonio community and to be able to serve more patients," says Mayela Guerra, Nuclear Medicine Technician.

When a patient returns not for care, but to say, “thank you,” it serves as a powerful reminder of the impact compassionate care can have. A grateful former patient, Deborah Sander, had previously received care at the Methodist Hospital Stone Oak Rehabilitation Center after undergoing several abdominal surgeries to treat a severe intestinal infection and obstruction.

During her recovery, the rehabilitation team supported her through every step of regaining strength and independence. Some time later, Deborah returned to the center, this time with gifts and heartfelt appreciation for the staff who helped her heal. We’re proud of our incredible staff for making recovery possible and memorable for our patients! Learn more about our rehabilitation services: https://bit.ly/4r2A32B

When Evie Garrett was nine years old, she was hospitalized for an infection in the growth plate of her heel. She spent over a month in care and endured multiple surgeries. During that difficult time, a Build-A-Bear brought her comfort and courage, a gift that inspired her to pay it forward.

Since then, Evie, now a local nursing student, has donated approximately 2,000 bears to children in hospitals and care facilities, each accompanied by crayons, a coloring sheet, and a heartfelt letter. Every bear is prayed over before delivery, reflecting Evie’s faith and commitment to spreading hope.

This season, Evie visited Methodist Hospital Hill Country to deliver Build-A-Bears as part of her ongoing effort to help children feel brave during challenging times. "Evie’s story is a beautiful example of how compassion and resilience can inspire lasting change,” said Chief Nursing Officer Maureen Polivka. “Her generosity brings comfort to our youngest patients and reminds us all of the power of kindness. We are honored to be part of her journey and proud to support her mission."
