The stork press is a great exercise for core stability, balance and is a sneaky good burn in the glute and hamstring on the stance leg. If you have a search party out for your glute this will find it.

Single arm kettlebell presses have been a staple of my program the last two months. They work pretty much everything in the shoulder and forearm long with core activation. Rep scheme is 2-3-5-10 taken from Dan John the master (credit where credit is due). Now Phil will absolutely torch my form!

The most valuable lesson 100 milers have taught me as a natural control freak is how to pivot, be resourceful and not get in my own head when things out of my control throw wrenches in my plans. If you can dodge a wrench you can dodge a ball. Stagecoach 100 was going perfectly until about mile 30 when the combination of heat, altitude and total sun exposure made my stomach shout, “we closed!” Any fuel or liquid I tried to consume the last 70 miles was a charity donation to ants on the side of the trail. All of that considered, I prepped myself for a long day of efficient hiking with trekking poles. Any attempt to pick up pace resulted in vomiting and full body cramps. This is not a finish time I’m proud of, but I’m proud of the ability to pivot to a B or C goal and make the best of a less than ideal situation. Finish time was 23:04 with original A goal of 20 hours and B goal of 22 hours. 9th place wasn’t too bad with about 65 miles of the race being hiking. Shout out to Marisol Muncy Askey for being the best crew and putting up with my pity parties and my wonderful Mother-in-law and Bob coming to the least spectator friendly event in history.

It has been 3 years since the world lost an irreplaceable friend, father, husband, brother, son and doctor. I know he wouldn’t want us to spend the day crying on the couch in his honor. He would want us to better ourselves in his honor. Go on a hike, do your wall stretches, plan a trip, thoughtfully challenge the status quo, be there for a friend in need, love on your kids and spouse, fire up a chainsaw, crack open a Lone Star or some sipping tequila, smoke some meat or do something that scares you. We never get better inside of our comfort zone. He left a void in all of us that he would want us to fill with a better version of ourselves that would make him proud.

I was watching a video of him yesterday where he was walking through the airport exhausted and he smiles to say, “Ever fly halfway around the world just to chase a dream? I think you should.” He took risks I never would have been brave enough to take to help others because his dreams were never selfish. Chase your dreams even when it’s scary, inconvenient, hard, uncomfortable or painful because the worst thing to be buried with is regret and leftover potential. Steve had a lot left to give the world, but damnit he lived fully, loved fully, and didn’t think twice about going all in on what he believed was right. Miss you my friend.

Favorite run of the trip so far running through a 4,000 acre forest in the middle of Lisbon. Too bad it’s named after the company I hate the most.
