it can be hard to have the confidence to just hold still during a massage, to have the supportive equipment that helps you maintain the pressure and angle effortlessly, and to have the patience, trust and palpatory skills to adapt your foot to what you are feeling.

Come to FasciAshi class with us for help on all these things and more ❤️‍🔥

Do you want to learn Barefoot Massage? Check out our page and website for more details on that, but for now, let's bust a little misinformation out of the way, because this is a hot topic right now!!! 💥

Just because we massage with our feet… and just because the word “ashiatsu” literally translates to foot pressure… does not mean the work we're doing is “Ashiatsu.” ⁣👣

For years, we at The Center for Barefoot Massage have been working to normalize "Barefoot Massage" as the umbrella term that honors the wide range of global traditions that use the feet as therapeutic tools. That includes Japanese barefoot (a)shiatsu, Indian Chavutti Thirumal, Hawaiian Kua Lua Lomi, Thai barefoot lineages, and the modern Western styles that developed here in the U.S.⁣

𝗕𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗳𝗼𝗼𝘁 𝗠𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗮𝗴𝗲 = any professional massage therapy technique performed with the feet as tools, not hands.

The word “Ashiatsu” belongs to a very specific cultural context — and the Westernized version many LMTs practice today is not the traditional Japanese form. The 1990s American technique was deep-tissue/Swedish-based and used overhead bars, oil, gliding, and tables. Traditional Japanese ashiatsu does none of that.⁣

⭐⭐⭐If you trained with us, you learned Myofascial Ashiatsu Barefoot Massage (FasciAshi)⭐⭐⭐ — a modern, evidence-informed lineage rooted in fascia research, biomechanics, pain science, and interoception. That’s not “Ashiatsu”… and it’s important to call it what it is.⁣

So when you’re naming services, educating clients, talking about it in convo, or using hashtags, remember:
Not every Barefoot Massage is “Ashiatsu.”
And if you must use the A-word to specify a style, use a full qualifier like:
👉 𝘔𝘺𝘰𝘧𝘢𝘴𝘤𝘪𝘢𝘭 𝘈𝘴𝘩𝘪𝘢𝘵𝘴𝘶 𝘉𝘢𝘳𝘦𝘧𝘰𝘰𝘵 𝘔𝘢𝘴𝘴𝘢𝘨𝘦
👉 Myofascial Barefoot Massage
👉 Or just Barefoot Massage

Better language = better clarity = better respect for every lineage that contributed to the global history of Barefoot Massage.

Let’s keep raising the standard — magazine editors, educators and practitioners included. 👣✨

Congratulations to my Fijian Barefoot Massage students who trained with me this weekend. Therapists from Texas, Iowa, New Mexico came together ready to learn, ready to stretch their knowledge, and ready to explore another layer of what’s possible in Barefoot Massage. This work asks for presence, patience, trust in your feet, and trust in the intelligence of the body. You stepped into that with such heart and curiosity.

Next month is Fundamentals! Another critical step in this barefoot journey.

If it’s time to learn something new, join Hillary for our last level one Fundamentals workshop of 2025 🎉

Fundamentals is the starting point for those wanting to train in the Myofascial Ashiatsu “FasciAshi” style of Barefoot Massage – although it’s a “beginner” class, it is definitely a challenge for your mind, body and SOLE.

⭐️ Learn how to use your feet to provide a full body deep tissue, myofascial focused ashiatsu barefoot massage session.

This class focuses on techniques applied on posterior aspects of the client’s body, as your weight and natural gravitational forces are utilized to effortlessly maintain consistent pressure through your feet.

Do you dress up for Halloween at work?!
I usually come up with an anatomy related Punny costume for work... Like one year I was an Osteophyte by wearing a Bone costume with boxing gloves. Another year I was a Bone Spur by wearing the same bone costume with local San Antonio Spurs basketball team shwag.

I have a good one for this year.....

We just spent four incredible days blending movement and myofascial work from our Intermediate and ROM / Stretch Therapy classes—feeling every shift from the inside out. We explored how strength and resistance activate each stretch, played with creative movement cues and angle of pressure options, fine-tuned the balance between grip and glide, and worked on each other with SERIOUSLY seasoned soles. Somewhere between the laughter, the learning, and the friendships, the classroom turned into its own little barefoot universe.

These deep-dive weekends with fellow fascia nerds (and a few Taylor Swift Easter egg saturated binge weekends of my own) fill my nervous system with the good kind of hum. Long live the SOLES who keep showing up with curiosity, intention, and open-minded feet: you help remind me that the future of massage really is a foot ❤️‍🔥

Barefoot Massage has come a long way since the Center for Barefoot Massage launched in 2017—and even further since I hung my very first strap back in 2003. Watching this work grow, evolve, and gain recognition has been one of the most empowering forces grounding my career… proof that when we follow our own pull of gravity in good company, we really can heel the world one sole at a time.

Thank you and have fun with the new stuff!

A year ago, I sat in a San Francisco lecture hall for a full weekend with the legendary Lorimer Moseley and the .usa alongside the one and only Ruth Werner. 🤓

We were 2 of only 3 LMTs in a room full of around 150 Physical/Occupational Therapy and Psychology nerve-nerd pro's. I made it about six or seven hours into the first day before my brain hit capacity. But that night, Ruth helped translate the hard parts into something my nervous system could digest... setting the stage for everything to click into place the next day. (Thank you!❤️‍🔥Turns out my threat response kicked in at the afternoon snack time — nociception became “no-mo’-re-tention.” ☠️)

It’s taken the past year for me to truly process what I learned there. Since then, I’ve been deep-diving into their research, integrating those ideas into client conversations, and finding ways to help our instructor team at the weave this science into what we teach and practice.

Rewiring your own “neuro-knowing” and creating shareable educational content on the topic isn’t quick or easy, it’s a process that unfolds through curiosity, repetition, and reflection. Just like the nervous system itself, learning takes time and safety.

🧠This is my reminder to everyone to never stop learning… go take the big classes in rooms full of big brains.
🧠Be in the moment and absorb the content from the source: even when your brain feels full.
🧠Don’t be afraid to fangirl over the people and subjects that light up and challenge your brain.
🧠And definitely don’t be too stubborn to ask for help when you hit those “what even is my brain doing?” moments.

Growth isn’t about knowing it all from the start ...it’s about staying curious enough to keep asking, listening, and learning until it lands.

That’s why I'm excited to thread Pain Science into every level of our Barefoot Massage curriculum for our entire team to present — giving you evidence-informed insights, language, and context to help you educate your clients and your community ...empowering them to reconnect, recalibrate, and rediscover what healing feels like underfoot!

Let's get nerdy: See you in the next FasciAshi class 👣⚡
