Collagen is not only essential for healing and sealing your gut, it’s also responsible for keeping your skin firm and elastic.
The most superficial layer of your skin, the one you can visually see, is called the epidermis. Directly underneath and attached to your epidermis is another layer called the dermis.
The dermis is what gives your skin a firm and youthful appearance. It’s mostly formed by collagen (around 70%) and elastin. This means that the collagen content of your dermis is key to keeping your skin from wrinkling and sagging.
Unfortunately, the collagen content tends to decline with age. By our mid-twenties it’s already begun reducing. According to the Dermato-Endocrinology Journal1, the collagen content of the skin declines approximately 1% per year, making your skin more vulnerable to sagging, wrinkling, and less resilient overall.
