If you see a need inside your community, there is no feeling out there like helping.
As a family, we have encountered hundreds of times that we were the ones who needed help. To have the opportunity to give it back is absolutely amazing.
Unfortunately, with the current state of the economy and the struggles of the families of South Central TX, especially rurally, many hard-working good people found themselves unable to protect themselves and their loved ones from the extreme temperatures. These are some of the most resilient and capable people in the country- all summer in over 110 degrees they adapt and work hard outdoors. The biological ability of a human to sustain a temperature swing of over 100 degrees after conditioning and even over months of adjustment is nearly impossible to adapt to. We provided a welcoming and safe place that expanded the bandwidth of the current emergency management system. Allowing folks to come to us keeps the emergency room for emergencies, for one example. Interrupting chaos and expanding the bandwidth of first responders is 100% our goal- even if a warming station was not exactly in our original capabilities.
Last but not least, we are so incredibly proud of our kids for jumping into the spirit of giving with both feet. We are also incredibly proud of each and every community member who selflessly dropped off what they could find in their pantry, running to the store for us with their own money, and stopping by to show us support. It was truly a moving experience, we are so proud of Poteet! *(Not pictured is our daughter, who was busy making super cool graphics for us!)*

ACF is restructuring to better align with its core mission of rapid disaster response and community support. Some programs are being paused while we rebuild stronger systems. Thank you in advance for your understanding.

I want to clarify that our assistance in any capacity- search and rescue, warming station, incident command, or any other way we choose to help Texans- that the income level of the people we are serving does not matter.
The homeless, billionaires, and every single human being in between. No life is too messy for us to reach out our hand, no matter what.
If you are unfamiliar with disasters or emergencies, a simple long duration temperature swing can and does cost good, hard-working Texans their lives. It isn't political, it is the simple recognition that many people cannot keep up and therefore postpone preparedness measures.
We believe strongly in the good nature of people, and we believe that most people are good and want to help- no matter their wallet or ability.
If you disagree with what we are doing, we assume it's because you don't see the good and helpful nature in yourself yet. Please take some time and explore how intensely fragile the systems both literal and sociological we rely on are, because no one should have to figure it out alone when they fail.

It may not seem like it but here is the truth about extreme temperatures in vulnerable populations- it becomes a public health emergency- the kind you cant follow the smoke for, or take a picture of the wreckage and debris- it happens person by person inside the homes of small towns. Many have no heat source- or no temperature regulation capabilities in their infrastructure or body that could help them deal with the weather. With an extended forecast of unsurvivably cold at night for the homeless or those without heat, our function in this instance is disaster and emergency mitigation. The 150 families we assisted could easily have strained an already stressed healthcare system, and that is why we do what we do, and why it is free.
