Well here is my story it started September 30, 2009, my son Mark A Martinez II and at that time 5 years old a healthy normal boy, who was a kindergarten student at Bulverde Creek Elementary and previously was a student at St John Bosco from the age of 2 had tested positive for Flu A commonly known as the H1N1. Shortly after testing positive, he was given a prescription Tami Flu, which is the antidote for the H1N1. After taking this med for 2 days @ 2 times a day, I notice he was …. JANDICE, called his pediatric, Dr Pauli and he schedule an appointment, upon seeing Markie he schedule blood work and schedule an ultrasound right away. This was Oct 2, 2009 we were told my son‘s gallbladder had collapse. The following week consist of more blood work and more meds and a specialty doctor. By the end of the following week, he was admitted to Santa Rosa Children Hospital where he was looked after for another week with his Liver numbers very elevated the doctors had no choice but to transport us to Texas Children Hospital in Houston, Texas on
on October 16, 2009. On Oct 26, 2009 he had his 1st Liver Transplant, he had internal bleeding so 3 hours after his transplant surgeons went back in to fix the bleeding and because of the bleeding he than had Acute Renal Failure and in Dialysis for 30 + continuous days and came close to a Kidney Transplant. During all this, his body stopped making Platelets so he was receiving platelets once or twice a week. (we were told if we had waited 2 more days Markie would not be here today). On November 4, 2009 had his 2nd Liver Transplant because the 1st clotted. Upon receiving his 2nd transplant, Markie caught the H1N1 again. With all the medications he was given he than became Hypertensive (high blood pressure) than he had seizures and brain bleed (Markie lost his eyesight for 7 days twice and regained his sight). Markie was giving injections for low potassium in the blood. We were told by cardiologist doctors that Markie had a severe heart murmur and may possible need a heart transplant…. His heart was fine the inconsistency was due to artifacts in the dialysis. Markie had to go thru Physical Therapy to learn to walk again. Thru all the ordeal of the transplant Markie than became Severe Aplastic Anemia (when blood-cell counts are very low, and is a life-threatening condition. Bone Marrow Transplant or stem cell transplant is recommended), Markie was receiving Platelets once or twice a week and blood every other week so often that he starting to react to it. Markie needed to be pre-medicated prior to receiving blood products. After a few treatments of what is called ATG, Markie is recovering thru it all and all thru the GRACE OF GOD. We are happy to say that since being transported to Houston, TX on Oct 2009, we are FINALLY coming home on June 13, 2011!!!!! My husband Mark has been living in San Antonio to work, while we lived in Houston. Every weekend my husband would travel back and forth and never gave up on us or said he was too tired to visit us. This is a true father day gift for him.
