Migraine is so much more than a headache, right? And there are non-drug solutions for your reduction and remission goals. Ask us about options beyond the pharma choices your doctor provides. Have you explored other modalities they don't offer as they are so "pharma focused?"

If you're suffering from pain in the head, you may be suffering from a primary or secondary headache, or a migraine. Discover basic differences.

EPIGENETICS. You are not your genes. It is so encouraging to know that solid research is being done on the effects of mind body interventions like mindfulness and meditation on gene expression! Check out the research emerging. We need to have people with serious health conditions like migraine know that their genes DO NOT control their destiny. Epigenetics tell us environmental signaling activates the expression of genes and thus we can affect the readout of our genes. This is so important for people to understand.

Our society/culture is still stuck in the belief system that says our genes/DNA control our destiny, that if a parent or grandparent had a condition and it is "hereditary" we will have it too and there is NOTHING we can do about it. NOT TRUE. Science has learned so much since the discovery of DNA. The field of epigenetics has been present and growing since 1990 and even earlier.

Our U.S. sick care system still tends to focus on genes and our DNA controlling our destiny. They exhibit little to no understanding of quantum physics or epigenetics. They need to catch up with science!

Until they catch up with science they will be stuck with pharmaceuticals continuing to be their primary solution and people will not achieve the wellbeing they have the potential to experience!

There is considerable evidence for the effectiveness of mind–body interventions (MBIs) in improving mental and physical health, but the molecular mechanisms of these benefits remain poorly understood. One hypothesis is that MBIs reverse expression of genes involved in inflammatory reactions that a...

FAQ: Is it possible to no longer have migraine or to be cured?

Answer: It is entirely possible to no longer have migraine symptoms or experience migraine attacks. Currently it is thought through data collected that 28-30% of people with migraine go into remission.
One study showed that among persons who had migraine during childhood, 62% were migraine free for more than 2 years during puberty and as young adults and that only 40% were still migraine free at age 30 years. [60]

It is also known that severity and frequency of migraine attacks tend to diminish as one gets older. After 15 years of suffering migraines, approximately 30% of men and 40% of women no longer have migraine attacks.

The caveat is that all of the above data is with our past knowledge and understanding about this neurological condition, the body's healing capabilities, treatment options, etc. There is now so much more understanding of epigenetics (vs genetics), how to self regulate our biology, create coherence, and create healing in our bodies from the inside as well as from external guidance.

We encourage you to deeply and keep tuning in for YOUR answers for your path to your remission.

I have just completed writing my newest book on Migraines. It's a pretty complete discussion about the Migraine problem and how my clinic has been able to successfully treat it.

As the one with migraine your perspective is critical as this article points out. The whole story is important so we'd recommend keeping not just a "headache" diary but a migraine diary. In a migraine diary you are noting all of your symptoms and what's going on for you experientially - thoughts, feelings, activities.

As well, when you are building your treatment and wellbeing plan with a goal and intention of REMISSION, be inclusive and consider the potential impact of all the options in a migraine treatment plan. See our first comment that lays out Dawn Buse, Ph.D visual of a migraine treatment map.

Stewart Tepper, MD, talks about how a migraine treatment plan is crafted with individual patients in mind.

ADVOCATES - we urge you to join us in becoming an advocate for people with migraine and/or upping your level of play! Migraine disease affects 47 million Americans -- 75 percent of whom are women. Get curious - if 1 out of every 5 women has migraine, who are these women in YOUR network? We must eliminate the stigma for our friends, empower them and help them get what they need. Listen to this NPR segment if you can to connect to the women sharing - read the transcript as well.

For 2020, the National Institutes of Health has allocated $27 million for migraine research, a paltry amount, say advocates, for a disease that affects 15 percent of Americans and leads to billions of dollars in lost productivity annually.

For comparison, the NIH allocated $31 million this year to anthrax, which affects just a handful of people every year.

What's the issue? A big part of it is the stigma.

Migraine disease affects 47 million Americans -- 75 percent of whom are women. Although headache is one symptom, attacks can include visual disturbances, nausea, extreme light and sound sensitivity, brain fog and debilitating pain. Stigma and gender stereotypes may complicate the medical response, t...

This post is for everyone - advocate and anyone who has symptoms who wonders if their symptoms are migraine as the American Migraine Foundation estimates that at least 36 million Americans get migraine, but it’s probably more because many people with migraine do not get a formal diagnosis or treatment from a migraine specialist.

Migraine is not just a headache. It’s a different disorder with different symptoms and different treatment approaches compared to ordinary headaches.

SCIENCE: As Dr. Umer Najib shares in this linked article, neuromodulation should be offered to people with migraine who do not respond to "first-line" treatment by their practitioner AND we would say if they do not achieve remission or recovery goals with first-line treatment as well. “For clinicians treating patients with migraine or other headache disorders, neuromodulation is considered when the patients are either refractory to first-line treatments or if the patients are unable to tolerate first-line treatments,” Najib said. “And that’s a good point for the treating physician to think about non-pharmacological options.”

We offer neuromodulation in our San Diego office and train practitioners in the use of neuromodulation for migraine pain attacks and other painful conditions. We recommend a full course of practitioner guided neuromodulation whenever possible to achieve goals. At home devices can then be used as needed if responsiveness achieved.

Umer Najib, MD, FAHS, shares who is a suitable candidate for non-invasive neuromodulation and explains how to gauge treatment success.

ADVOCATES: This CBS Sunday Morning news segment was a wake up call for Kay Lathrop to become an active advocate for women with migraine. Please watch and tap into your potential to help many women, men and youth in your life! Segment synopsis:

About one in seven people live with what's ranked as the second-most debilitating disease on the planet, right after back pain: migraine. Though the causes are unclear, migraine is a serious neurological disease that often runs in families. But the malady is not often taken seriously, in part because the headaches, sensitivity to light and sound, nausea, dizziness, and a host of other symptoms affect three times as many women as men. Correspondent Susan Spencer talks with doctors grappling with treatments for migraine (and a shortage of migraine researchers), and a Cincinnati artist whose migraine visions have become key to her art.

"If you had a device that could terminate a migraine attack without a drug, why wouldn't you try that first if it didn't have side effects?"
Dr. Stewart Tepper, Professor of Neurology at Dartmouth.

Our experience exactly. And before you buy various devices you can experience neuromodulation for yourself in a clinic setting like ours in San Diego. We also train practitioners around the country when needed.
