NO. NO. NO. Justice Ginsberg, oh how we love you. You were our Wise Woman. Tender and truthful and wise — our lioness for justice. You would come to Yale Law School when I was student and inspire us — not just with the ferocity of your intellect but with your grace and dignity AND your marvelous humor. You showed us how to find longevity in the fight for justice — with faithfulness, bravery, and joy. And you blazed a path for all of us young women. I even did the Canadian Airforce routine every day because of you. :) Now beloved Ruth, you are gone. Just when you did not wish to go. We did not want you to go. You said to your granddaughter, “My most fervent wish is that I will not be replaced until a new president is installed." You knew what your passing would bring.
Before the 2016 election, Mitch McConnell said, “The American people should have a voice in the selection of their next Supreme Court Justice. Therefore, this vacancy should not be filled until we have a new president.” Tonight he just issued a statement: “President Trump’s nominee will receive a vote on the floor of the United States Senate.” They are not even trying to hide their hypocrisy.
Tonight we grieve. Let the tears come. AND let the rage rise. Scream. Breathe through it. Know that you are not alone. We are with you. It’s okay to feel this. But don’t for a second think that all is lost. It’s not over yet. They are counting on your despair. Don’t give it to them. We are going to need you, yes YOU. Your energy and voice. Tonight we breathe. Tomorrow we push. For Ruth.

Posted • .msrd ✨Social justice conversations consistently center white people’s narratives and make them feel like the “good white person” or the “woke white person”. A lot of the content is copied and reposted from Black and Brown creators. The language and offerings are often appropriated from the lived experiences of Black and Brown folks, and is then used to make a profit and increase their social capital. The Black and Brown creators go without credit and payment, and are pushed further into the margins of social justice work as white audiences continue to center themselves.

Look at your favorite white social media content creators, they most likely have thousands/millions of followers and endorsements. Meanwhile accounts of Black and Brown people are being policed, reported, and targeted by trolls while their work is stolen and repackaged by these top names on social media. It is past time to center the voices and narratives of Black and Brown people. It is time that Black and Brown people get paid for our emotional labor and given due credit for our content. We need to turn down the volume on those who are profiting from our experiences and start listening to marginalized folks. We can’t let privileged folks continue to expand their social capital and profits while oppressing others. We challenge you to Amplify Melanated Voices this week, and silence the white narrative. •

Flowers. Blooms. Color. Scent. These have helped me the most in the past few months with settling my nervous system, giving me perspective, and bringing me into present moment time. ⁠
⁠🌿
First it was the abundant cascading California poppies, taking over my backyard with their glorious glowing orange petals. Now it's the gardenias. My gardenias are blooming like they never have before with rich dark shiny leaves, and layer upon layer of delicate satin petals.⁠

This past week I have been drinking in the scent, a complex blend of vanilla, honey, and some tropical memory that my body knows and my mind has no words for... Nose buried deep like a hummingbird or bee, I am drawn to close my eyes and inhale the goodness, over and over again.⁠
⁠🌿
Each time I breath in, I feel my whole being pause, and focus, being reminded that unfolding is a slow process. As I exhale, I allow my shoulders to rest, my eyes to close, my breath a reminder that each moment carries with it the possibility of rest and resourcing.⁠

Today, I invite you to find a flower, in your yard, on a walk, in your memory, on your page and allow yourself to drink in the goodness using all your senses. ⁠

I read these words and my body, my being, exhales a long, deep sigh of belief (relief) (left the typo in because it’s too good!) .⁠

I read these words as an invocation, an invitation, and offering for how to be with yourself and in the world.⁠

I have newly discovered and am deeply inspired by the work of Tricia Hersey through . ⁠

I will be resting into her words today and onward.⁠

Notice how it feels to read these words. What happens in your being, in your body? Invite curiosity.⁠

I don't want to.⁠
I can't find myself.⁠
I don't feel safe.⁠

Now, notice again how it feels to read them. What changes in your being, in your body? Be curious about what does or does not arise.⁠

I don't know yet.⁠
I'm sad, yet hopeful.⁠
I don't want to yet.⁠
I can't find myself yet.⁠
I don't feel safe yet.⁠

Adding "yet" can help refocus on the direction of and permission to be on a journey rather than feeling impossibly tethered to a known familiar painful landmark.⁠

Inviting "yet" into your language helps expand, hold space for, and allow what is true in current time while also inviting change for the future.⁠

The word "yet" supports complexity and movement away from black and white thinking, helping seemingly incongruous feelings and experiences to exist in real time together.⁠

As both a boundary and a willingness to embrace what is not yet known or experienced, "yet" can offer safety and hope in the process of growth and change.⁠

On a walk yesterday, my two year old made a game of finding homes for fallen leaves and flowers. She would pause, consider, and then confidently say “that’s their home” and place said leaf or flower in the spot.

I witnessed her doing this over and over, enjoying the quality of her attention and intention. I could feel relaxation in my body, easy breath, and curiosity pull me closer to her as she followed some clear inner direction.

I glanced away for a moment and when I turned back, was gifted with this... a flower nestled gently among the rough cracked sidewalk. I felt my heart soften and swell as I knelt down, touched to my core by this simple and profound act of finding home.

During this time of cracked ground and shattered safety, unsettled and uncertain futures, may we each find a gentle home within ourselves in which to rest and be nourished.
