Last weekend, the Imperial Valley community came together for the Imperial Valley People First (IVPF) Conference, and what a success it was!

Nearly 100 participants attended, along with dedicated volunteers, exhibitors, and presenters, creating a vibrant space for connection, learning, and celebration. One of the many highlights of the day was keynote speaker Spenser Duncan, who shared his latest cookbook featuring recipes from around the world, a perfect reflection of this year’s conference theme: “Around the World: Celebrating Our Stories, Our Voices & Our Communities.”

The conference also featured a resource fair with 30 vendors and micro-businesses, providing valuable information, services, and opportunities to support local entrepreneurs and educational workshops focused on self-advocacy, rights, and navigating services. Fun activities, including bingo, prizes, and dancing, created a memorable celebration for all.

This event reflected the strength and continued growth of the People First movement in the Imperial Valley. Thank you to everyone who helped make it possible. đź’™

March 26th is Purple Day! Purple Day is a day to increase awareness for individuals with epilepsy, 8% of the individuals we serve at SDRC. Across the globe, people wear purple, they educate, offer resources about seizures, and share their personal stories of epilepsy.

Today, we're highlighting Tristan. Tristan is a proud uncle, loves Legos, the Chargers, and creating art. Tristan also owns his own Business, Kasa Succulents and Plants, where he sells beautiful plant arrangements and artwork.

At 9 years old, Tristan was diagnosed with epilepsy. At first, we found it really difficult to make friends, as he wasn't able to do things that a lot of other kids could do, like swim in the ocean and learn to drive. Something Tristan wishes people understood about epilepsy is that: "I'm different than them. Epilepsy is more than the moments that you are having a seizure; it affects you all the time."

Despite many barriers in his life, Tristan is proud of getting a job and continuing to create art for his business that he sells at our SDRC Holiday Craft Fairs and conferences.

As everyone's experience living with epilepsy is different, Tristan's journey shows how success, in whatever form that may be, is obtainable. We encourage you to spread the word about epilepsy, no matter the day!

In honor of Cerebral Palsy Awareness Day, we asked Dennis to share his experience as an individual living with cerebral palsy.

Throughout Dennis’s life, he shared that “fitting in” didn’t come easily to him. He expressed that his cerebral palsy often presents differently than most individuals he's met with the same diagnosis, which led to him feeling isolated from this community as well as many of his peers without a disability. Despite this, Dennis forged his own path both personally and professionally as an award-winning photographer.

Over the last few years, through photography workshops he hosts for organizations supporting individuals with disabilities, Dennis has been able to reconnect with this community. He reminds us that people with disabilities may communicate differently than what you may be familiar with. But what’s most important is to speak to the person as you would anyone else. Equity is essential to building inclusive communities where everyone belongs.

This Cerebral Palsy Awareness Day, we invite you to lead with inclusion.

"Just Evolve." This year's World Down Syndrome Day campaign focuses on the use of the R-word and shows real-life examples to compare how this word reinforces harmful stereotypes. Using language that creates a more equitable world for everyone is how we all can evolve.

Watch the campaign below. ⬇️

Using disability-related words as insults is a thing of the past. Update your language to build a more equitable world for everyone. ...
