Squiggly note days. What does your learning look like?

I was recently thinking about my time in University, and what it felt like to be held in a safe space where everyone seemed open to learning together. From and with our unique multilayered lenses, we peeled back narratives in search of deeper, wider and more fluid “truths”. What a privilege it was. What a powerful experience to keep in mind.

Today I was introduced to the work of Dr David Nylund while dialing in to a Narrative Therapy Training Series offered by Two Feathers Native American Family Services in Humboldt State, CA. Their series has been a highlight of my commitment to learning during the COVID crisis. Today Dr Nylund’s passion for working within marginalized communities really spoke to me, especially his perspectives on unpacking differences between allyship and elevated co-conspiratorship. My learning looks like islands of discourse and the squiggly movement of connectivity.

Dr David Nylund is a a professor of Social Work at California State University, Sacramento and the Clinical Director of the Gender Health Center and I cannot wait to delve into more of his work on Narrative, Q***r theory and Cultural work.

I’m muted.

I won’t be posting my own content from today June 1st – June 7th in order to

I’ll be actively participating in a movement created by .msrd and to share and amplify the essential work, wisdom and lived experience stories of Black, Indigenous and People of Colour (BIPOC).

Organiser and activist .msrd explains why: “Social justice conversations consistently center around white peoples narratives and make them feel like the “good white person” or the “woke white person”. A lot of the content is copied and reposted from black and brown creators. The language and offerings are often appropriated from the lived experience of Black and Brown folks, and then is used to make a profit and gain capital. The Black and Brown creators go without credit and payment and are pushed further into the margins of social justice work as white audiences continue to center themselves.”

Please visit their profiles to learn more and support them monetarily if you can. I encourage you all to start the process or reengage, interact, learn and unlearn with me. Black lives matter and black narratives matter – let’s listen.

I’ve been reflecting lately on the meanings that people place on receiving signs and signals.

For example, I took a local neighbourhood walk on the weekend as a way to relieve some tension in my mind. I turned a corner into a street I’d never been down and saw that it was lined with gorgeous Jacaranda trees. Now, many of my friends from Brisbane, Australia would know that the city is well known for its purple blooms. To see this here, in San Diego, brought me immediate comfort and joy. It connected me to moments in my life where I felt safe and amongst friends.

I have also shared in conversations with people that have lost loved ones and they recall significant experiences of “signs”. I’m curious about this, and I wonder what it means to be connected to the people we love in ways that perhaps don’t make sense in a traditional way.

Would you care to share an experience with us, and perhaps some of your thoughts on why or maybe how this story connects to your own search for meaning?
