I could use some help going through things at the birth center. If you are a birthworker or a family planning a homebirth and you need some supplies, join me on Saturday, November 1 at 10am to help with clearing out the birth center.

Wow, y'all. It's almost 5 years to the day.

It is with deep gratitude and a touch of sadness that we share that San Diego Community Birth Center has officially closed its doors.

We know this news may come as a surprise, and we sincerely apologize for the abruptness of the transition. Please know this decision was made with great care, reflection, and respect for all that we’ve built together.

When you helped to found the Birth Center, our mission was to create a space where families could experience birth with dignity, empowerment, and grace. Over the years, we’ve been honored to help create community, provide education, and advocate for compassionate, informed care.

Together, we built something truly special — a place where families, midwives, and their supporters came together to share in life’s most profound beginnings. Our work together is complete — but not finished. There is still work to be done. The United States still outspends any other developed nation on maternity care with some of the worst outcomes. Midwifery care changes lives.

As we close this chapter, we are still working to cover our final transition and closing costs. If you feel called to support us during this time, donations can be made through our GoFundMe.

Every contribution — large or small — helps us conclude this journey with the same care and integrity that guided our beginning.

Provider Spot Light! Parva Shayassi-Hall, LM, CPM

Parva Shayassi-Hall is a midwife, mother, artist, and lifelong belly dancer whose passion for birth work grew from exploring the cultural roots of belly dance and its connection to childbirth.

After completing her midwifery training and extensive preceptorships, she stepped back to experience her own pregnancy, birth, and postpartum journey. During this time, she deepened her connection to ancestral womb care, blending traditional wisdom with modern knowledge.

With her unique mix of artistic expression, cultural insight, and evidence-based care, Parva empowers families through one of life’s most sacred transitions. She is honored to join San Diego Community Birth Center and looks forward to providing compassionate, personalized care.

January is Cervical Health Awareness Month!

You don’t need to have a baby to have a midwife! At San Diego Community Birth Center, we provide a full spectrum of care, including preventive health services for everyone in our community. This January, we’re offering:

🩺Complimentary cervical screenings (often called Pap tests) to detect potential changes early.
🍈🍈Breast/chest wellness exams tailored to your needs.
💉Additional STI testing and rapid HIV screenings available for a minimum donation of $50.

It's Christmas Eve and I'm officially off call until the new year. The Universe sent us one more baby full of Wisdom Beyond Our Understanding before the new year, and her arrival was singularly perfect and incredibly special like each baby's arrival before hers. Mother was calm, focused, housed safely in her own body. She knows the process of birth: how it works, how to listen to her body, follow its lead with her own intuition. Father was calm, present and attentive, trusting Mother's body and instincts; excited to joyously receive into his hands this newest little being.

I just needed to sit still in this quiet birth center on this Christmas Eve and be grateful. I am incredibly thankful for all the birthing families that work with me, trust and teach me, and are receptive to my guidance, love and support. I am grateful for all the babies that show me the beauty, wonder, and simplicity of the web of life, and how we are all connected to Spirit, despite how hateful and cruel the news will show that we can be to each other. I am grateful that all those families and all those babies have come safely through.

Thank you, thank you, thank you. Thank you families. Thank you friends. Thank you deep ancestral wisdom. Thank you education and understanding, questions and science where we ground ourselves. Thank you, intuition. Thank you generous grant providers for believing in me and the Little Birth Center That Could. Thank you, Midwives, fearless, gentle, earnest and brave, with hearts two sizes too big who stand alongside me in supporting this work and loving on these families.

In the upcoming year, may we be strong, may we be bold, may we be safe, and may we stick closely to what our souls know is the right thing: caring and looking out for each other. I look forward to the privilege of caring for the smallest of us, housed inside the strongest of us.

Let's all hold hands and sashay into the new year.
