As you envision the year ahead, are you focused on goals and accomplishments, or are you actually planning to enjoy the journey?
I used to think that “I’d be happy when …” When I got the better job. When I got the better apartment in the better neighborhood. When I had more time to relax and enjoy myself… Until I realized that I was wishing my weekdays away and living for the weekend, and none of it felt any fun. Stress started to affect my body, my moods, my relationships, and I just felt more overwhelmed and isolated.
It was while I was working with elder clients, helping them to move to new homes because they weren’t able to live independently anymore, that I finally saw the connection between lives spent committed to striving for success and missing out on the simple things that support health, resilience, and happiness, and the chronic diseases they were navigating. Cancer, dementia, respiratory illness, even simply loneliness can lead to health issues that require care.
And that’s when I knew that stress was the common denominator, that ignoring it was the biggest culprit, and that by working upstream of the expressed illness we can prevent it altogether.
When we put a priority on recovering from stress, getting the rest that heals us, eating nourishing food (and being able to digest it!) and moving our bodies, not only can we prevent disease that steals our independence, we can be happier now, which actually leads to the success that we think requires sacrificing all that we love.
Wow!
So join me, Let’s flip the script on stress, reclaim our power to be healthy AND happy, and enjoy life now ~ and long into the future.
