If your little one is cranky, unusually fussy and tugging at his or her ear or is feverish and having difficulty sleeping, chances are it may be due to an ear infection. Ear infections in children often go away on their own or in some cases with antibiotic treatment. The challenge for many parents is knowing what to do in this situation, especially when traveling for the holidays. Norovirus can spread easily, especially during holiday gatherings. This highly contagious stomach virus can cause symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and stomach pain, sometimes along with fever or body aches. While most people recover within a few days, practicing good hand hygiene, cleaning shared surfaces and staying home when sick can help protect yourself and others and reduce the spread during the holidays.

E-bikes are a popular gift throughout the year, whether for holidays or birthdays. But they’re not just ordinary bikes — especially for younger riders. With speeds and handling closer to mopeds, e-bikes require proper training to ride safely.

Walter Biffl, MD, medical director of trauma and acute care surgery at Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla, discusses why e-bike safety is critical for younger riders and how proper education can prevent serious injuries.

Scripps Health Injury Prevention Program, in partnership with the American Bicycling Education Association, offers free E-bike Training for Youth in San Diego County. The program teaches safety gear, traffic rules, crash prevention and essential riding skills to keep young riders safe on roads and bike paths.
