"Diagnostics testing is an essential global tool to monitor infection rates and variant surveillance." – Paul K Drain, MD, MPH

In a recent webinar, Dr. Drain discusses the importance of diagnostic testing during peak respiratory seasons and how he turns to the SOFIA™ 2 Analyzer, providing automated results as early as three to 15 minutes, "it's really been great for those patients where we want to get a result very quickly".

In the U.S., pneumonia is responsible for over 450 million cases and 4 million deaths annually, with cases rising as the cold and flu season peaks. Pneumonia can have many causes, and its symptoms can overlap with those of other respiratory illnesses, complicating diagnosis.

Rapid, accurate diagnostics and real-time symptom monitoring are critical to helping clinicians respond efficiently to pneumonia cases and improve patient outcomes, explains QuidelOrtho’s Kevin King. WBC. CRP. Lactate. IL markers.

How does procalcitonin (PCT) compare to other biomarkers and why does it matter when making antibiotic therapy decisions?

In this upcoming webinar, Mike Broyles, PharmD, breaks down how PCT differs from other biomarkers and how it can be used to objectively assess bacterial infection severity in the emergency department.

Join us to learn how PCT can help:
• Differentiate infectious vs. non-infectious inflammation
• Distinguish viral from bacterial etiologies
• Support safer antibiotic stewardship

Around 90% of the U.S. population will need donated blood at some point in their lives.

However, blood shortages, along with rising burnout and vacancies among laboratory staff, threaten the healthcare industry’s ability to provide safe, reliable blood to patients who need it most. Recognizing the critical role clinical lab professionals play and taking steps to improve their morale can help safeguard a strong and stable blood supply.

For years, clinicians have relied on non-specific biomarkers that can’t clearly distinguish bacterial from viral infections, often leading to unnecessary antibiotic use.

Join us for an educational webinar exploring how 25 years of experience with procalcitonin (PCT) can support smarter, more confident antibiotic decisions in the emergency department.

Led by Mike Broyles, PharmD, this session will examine the unique pathophysiology and kinetics of PCT and how it can help reduce antibiotic-associated adverse events.

What you’ll learn:
• How PCT responds differently to bacterial vs. viral infections
• Why PCT offers advantages over traditional inflammatory markers
• How to apply PCT insights using real-world ED case studies

“We are reaching a critical point in our ability to supply blood to the people who need it most,” says QuidelOrtho’s Bryan Hanson.

Bryan mentions that ongoing blood shortages driven by low donation rates, combined with increasing laboratory staff burnout and vacancies, can put patient care at risk, especially for patients with conditions requiring frequent transfusions. With no substitute for human blood, it is critical that we take action to ensure healthcare providers can continue delivering lifesaving care to every patient.

Testing early is key to helping protect the health of your family and friends. With the rise of respiratory cases this season, Duane Jones discusses the importance of test-to-treat protocols and how integrating those into an existing pharmacy offering can help support appropriate treatment decisions and antibiotic stewardship.

"Statistics show that about 52% of the patients [seen at a physician's office] that are treated for flu actually weren't tested…" – Duane Jones
