Beans pack a lot of nutrients, including potassium, zinc, iron, magnesium, folate, and vitamin B6, among others. They also deliver as much as one-quarter of their weight in protein, and contain a healthy dose of fiber, which is good for gut bacteria and keeps us regular.

However, beans contain a lot of carbs -- up to three-quarters by weight.

Most of these carbs are starch meaning chains of sugar, the same in grains. The starches are different from those found in grains in an important way, which we’ll explain in a bit.

Beans can promote the overgrowth of bad bacteria in the gut, which can create gas and systemic inflammation in some people. So, when you balance out their nutritional benefits and disadvantages, our blind faith in beans may have been misplaced. And the advice to eat them freely may be misguided.

They can be part of a healthy diet, but not a staple.

However, avoid lima and kidney beans are high on starch which spikes insulin. And avoid peanuts because for the most part, they're high in toxins.

The maximum serving is ½ cup once a day. But if you are very active you may be able to tolerate more beans.

Avoid beans if:
You are insulin resistant or have type 2 diabetes
You’re prone to food allergies or sensitivities
You have dangerous belly fat
You have IBS
You have any autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, psoriasis, lupus, or any of the rest
