Melissa Nefalar, MS, LMFT #53720

I have been practicing Marriage and Family Therapy since 2005 and I'm a Licensed Marriage & Family Therapist (MFC #53720) in the Eastlake community of Chula Vista, CA. This means that I have well over 3,000 hours of clinical experience with the bulk of my experience focusing on children, teens, and families. I have experience as a Bereavement Counselor for San Diego Hospice focusing on bereaved families, individuals, children, and groups as well as individuals and families seeking end of life transition counseling. I have been a case manager working with pregnant and parenting women all over San Diego County. I have worked for two local non-profits assisting children and teens with behavioral, emotional, educational, or ERMHS therapy needs. I can provide school or clinic-based therapy services to families and youth through Family Forces and have been with that program for over three years and have worked with families at Camarena Elementary as a Military & Family Life Counselor (MFLC). I have been in private practice for over three years and I am pleased to be able to focus on special populations that I thoroughly enjoy supporting while making my schedule fit with my family's needs. Through my experience I have learned that every person’s needs are different. I am honored in helping those experiencing grief and bereavement through helping families with the healing process of losing a loved one. I enjoy working with the elderly and older adult population through the life exploration process. As a mother, I also enjoy working especially with women’s issues prenatal, postpartum, and parenting. The work I do will strengthen relationships and bring about much needed change in sometimes chaotic or stressful lives. When I am not busy helping others with their healing or growing process, I enjoy spending my time with family, friends, and enjoying what this world has to offer. I believe that self-care is one of the most important ways that we can maintain serenity and peacefulness, and I care for myself through taking dance classes, experiencing musical and theater performances, or watching an enjoyable movie. As a resident of Chula Vista I am excited to serve my local community.

Happy Friday!! A little reintroduction to me. I have some rare availability as soon as next week between the hours of 9am to 2pm if you or someone you know may be in need.

I’m a Filipino American daughter of immigrants and recently self-identified neurodivergent mom (autistic) parenting at least one neurospicy child (it’s unofficial on my other kids so far). I’m client-centered and think systemically and holistically, meaning I take into context a person’s environment and how their bodies are functioning or responding to their stressors, not strictly on someone’s diagnosis. I tend to focus on bottom-up (body-based) approaches but also lean into parts work, ACT, and narrative approaches. I’m in network with Aetna, Cigna, Anthem blue cross, United healthcare, and a few EAP plans. I enjoy focusing on women and their mental health throughout their reproductive years and hormone-related mental concerns including infertility, PMDD, PCOS, pregnancy, postpartum, and perimenopause. I also working with BIPOC or neurodivergent folks, and grief/loss. I’m perinatal mental health certified (PMH-C) and brainspotting certified.

So I’m getting vulnerable in honor of

I had the WORST panic attack I’ve ever had last week. So bad that it lasted about an hour and days later I’m still recovering as my nervous system is still activated in fight/flight mode. At the time I tried to do all the things, breathing, EFT tapping, stimulating my vagus nerve - cold water immersion, movement. Nothing seemed to help alleviate it, so I had to ride the wave.

We CAN get through hard things, even when they’re challenging AF. I’ve set up meetings with my doctor and therapist to check in and make sure there’s not any underlying medical issues and get some much needed support. Along with the theme of this year’s world mental health day, “mental health is a universal human right.” I’m choosing and choosing to get through this moment to moment.

Happy Friday! I’m celebrating some big milestones this month. Ten years ago I officially got my license and then a few weeks later I opened up my own solo practice. I’ve come a long way and I’m on how much I’ve grown as a human and therapist, and looking forward to lots of exciting things coming up in the future! I’ll be expanding some services - hosting some fun workshops and retreats. I’ll also be teaming up with some great friends and new partnerships who are in alignment with my values and vision. Stay tuned!

Asian Americans are the fastest growing ethnic group in the US. May isn't the only time to learn about the history of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders, but it does give us a chance to expand our understanding of different cultures and the multitude of contributions by AAPI people.

Repost from

Maternal Mental Health Month 2023 starts today!

Maternal Mental Health Month is more than just 30 days dedicated to raising awareness about perinatal mental health. It is an opportunity for PSI to make a worldwide impact with the help of other organizations, providers, and survivors of perinatal mood disorders willing to share their knowledge, stories, experiences and most importantly, the resources that can support help-seekers in healing. This year, we want Maternal Mental Health Month to be a celebration of hope, help and healing.

Postpartum Support International is hosting an exclusive campaign for Maternal Mental Health Month 2023 in May: Healing Starts With Help.

When it comes to perinatal mental health disorders, there is nothing more important than providing parents and help seekers with the help and support that they need. People want and need to know how and where to get help, and fast! The problem is, many people don’t know where or how to ask for help. As an organization, we have an imperative responsibility to create awareness about the availability of help resources so that we can help and support as many people and families as possible. After all, people want to feel better. They want to heal. With help, they can. The more we post these resources, the more awareness we can create and the more people we can help together

Help us raise awareness about where, when and how to seek help when experiencing symptoms of Perinatal Mental Health Condition. Share resources, stats and facts using hashtag or share your story using hashtag .
