A journey with hummingbird can help you add sweetness to your life.

The hummingbird resides in the North quadrant of the Inca medicine wheel. It represents our soul’s journey, living life in trust of our path and taking it from the mundane to the mythic.

This hummingbird, known as Siwar Qinti in the Qechua language, is a tiny bird that make a migration of thousands of miles every year from South America to Canada. It does this on tiny wings over open water and not asking why it is going or if it is safe or comfortable, or what will be at the end of the journey.

Hummingbirds feed mainly on nectar. They are great pollinators of flowers, pollinating from 1,000 to 3,000 flowers a day. They do not get distracted by plants that don’t nourish them. They can hover over a flower in stillness while their wings are beating furiously and can also back up in flight. Anyone who’s ever had a feeder or plants that these amazing creatures like, knows they are also quite territorial, even chasing much larger birds away from their favored plant.

Journey with hummingbird to discover where more trust, maneuverability, and more sweetness can bring more beauty into your life.

The Journey

Make sure you are in a quiet place where you will not be disturbed. Keep a journal and pen handy to write down any answers that come.

Open sacred space.

Do your centering breath as described in the post about journeying.

Drum or rattle until you reach an altered state of consciousness.

Imagine walking out your front door and through a mist into a garden or meadow. Find a seat and call on hummingbird.

Ask hummingbird:

What can you teach me about trusting my journey?

How can I add more sweetness too my life?

Where can I pollinate more sweetness in my life? How can I add it to other’s lives?

Is there anything I am doing that doesn’t nourish me and I need to let go?

Is there anywhere my life I am too guarded, where I can share more?

Write down any answers you get.

You may want to do this in more than one journey so you make hummingbird an ally on which you can call when you need the medicine of trust and finding the sweetness in life.

Jaguar Journey
Going Fearlessly to the Place Beyond Death
This is not a journey we’ll be taking in a beautiful automobile. This is a journey with the great cat that resides in the west of the Inca Medicine Wheel.
Once we’ve faced things “the way they are” without emotion in the South with Serpent, we may notice that we have emotions about those “facts”. Often those are emotions of fear, based on doubt and shame. Those emotions result in stories where we can lay responsibility outside ourselves and onto “the other”. These stories become the “reasons” that our life is the way it is and not all that we would want it to be.
Jaguar is a great tracker, a fearless being with the ability to see into the darkness, acute hearing and who can walk silently through the dense jungle. Just the resources we need to track through our stories to find any self-deceptions that need to be destroyed and replaced with the truth that we are loved and lovable creations of the divine worthy of experiencing the abundance of creation.
Jaguar, when made an ally, can also be a fierce protector. An energetic resource that can be called on in difficult situations to maintain a centered presence that projects authority and power.
The west is where the sun sets and symbolically, the place beyond death. Jaguar takes departed souls across the rainbow bridge to that place. If there is something in your life that needs to be released, you can let Jaguar take it there.
The Journey
First do your centering breath.
Drum or rattle until you reach an altered state of consciousness.
Imagine walking out your front door and through a mist into a garden or meadow. Find a seat and call on Jaguar to come visit you.
Have a conversation with this beautiful animal. Honor her power and abilities. Then ask if there is anything she wants to tell you. What advice does she have so you can befriend her? Are there any situations in your life that would be best served by approaching with caution?
Visit Jaguar often and make friends so she can be an ally when facing fearful situations.
As you develop the relationship you can travel on her back into the jungles of the subconscious/underworld to the places in ourselves where we don’t want to look. Often it is best to work with a trained practitioner on these types of journeys, so we don’t get lost and stuck in some scary place. It is our own subconscious that knows how to hide the things we don’t want to see.

Shedding the Old & Growing into the New
A Journey with Serpent
Each time we enter a new year there are celebrations to mark the passing of the last one and welcome in the new. There are resolutions and the hope that the things we did not like about the last year will be washed away and the new year will bring more of whatever it is we feel we lack: money, love, joy, a sense of purpose, or something else.
What we fail to realize is that we are taking our old selves into the new year with our same beliefs and behaviors. Yes, we make resolutions to change behaviors, but these often fail within a few weeks if not sooner. We may start with sincere resolve but find it too difficult to keep going with the new way of eating, or exercising, etc. to continue. Why is that?
Shamanic practitioners across cultures and millennia have known that we need to change at the energetic level to create and sustain change at the physical. This is physical law: E=mc2. While you could work hard at the physical to change the energetic, it would take a lot of work and wouldn’t be sustained without a change in underlying beliefs. Where subconscious, or unconscious beliefs of inadequacy, unlovability, unworthiness, hopelessness, exist, those beliefs will work to sabotage any change made at the physical so that our behaviors comport with the underlying beliefs.
The shamans of old did not have physics labs to run experiments, they were great observers of the natural world. Most great physicists today also have this talent. It was Einstein’s observation of the world while moving on a train and considering how different it would look standing still that lead to the theory of relativity. These shamans were familiar with the ways of nature: the plants, the animals, the wind, the water, the rocks, and stones. They understood the character of each, their individual nature and how they all worked together to create harmony. They could call upon the archetypes of these energies when needed to restore healing and balance.
For letting go of the old and walking through the world in a new way, the energy of serpent is a great ally. For a serpent to grow, it needs to shed its old skin. The process also gets rid of any parasites that might have attached themselves to their skin. It does that all at once, not a little bit here and there. It is a process that happens from four to twelve times a year. The snake will begin by rubbing their head against something abrasive to create a tear, when that is large enough, they simply wriggle forward, leaving the old behind.
Snakes also move belly to belly with the earth, always in alignment. No heavy tromping about. They are flexible and take on the temperature of their environment. They see things at a “just the facts” level, without emotion or color commentary. Always a good place to start.
If there are things you’d like to release from the last year, or longer, and walk fresh into the new, a journey with serpent can help.
Journeying with Serpent
Any journey can be greatly helped by having a rattle or drum. If you don’t have either you can put pebbles in can, something to make noise. If you still don’t have anything that’s OK too.
Do a few minutes, it needn’t be more than one to two of meditative breathing. The square breathing technique is quite effective. Breathe in to a count of four, hold a count of four, exhale to a count of four and hold to a count of four. Repeat.
Begin rattling or drumming if you like you can chant also. This may be done standing or sitting. The point is to get to an altered state of consciousness. Follow the sound of the rattle or drum.
Imagine you stand up and walk out your front door into a veil of mist. Step through the mist into a garden, or meadow. Someplace in natural beauty. Find a place to sit there, a rock or a bench, a log. Whatever shows up for you. Sit down and ask serpent to come to you. This may not be immediate or even happen the first time you call if you are new at journeying, that’s OK.
If you have been feeling constricted anywhere in your life, or feeling the sting of bite, Serpent may have been trying to get your attention.
Ask the serpent what you need to release.
Is it an old idea or belief?
Is it a behavior?
Is it something bigger like a relationship, a job or even a move?
When you have your answer(s), return to the sound of the rattle/drum and write them down.
Later you can do a fire ceremony to release that which needs to die, in order for the new to be born.

About Andrea

To***co has long been considered a sacred plant by native peoples thought the Americas. I t was to***co that called Andrea to learn the ways of the Shaman, although in a very roundabout way.

Back in the 90’s she was diagnosed with a lung disease as a result of working in a smoking environment while employed as a commercial property and casualty insurance broker. The smoke was so bad in the office, it actually set off smoke alarms. No amount of negotiating or letters from doctors would persuade her employer to move them out to the balconies, of which there were several. At that point she decided to take on the to***co industry and stand up for the right to simply breathe. Along the way she helped create Smokefree airports and athletic venues. She participated in getting Los Angeles to pass it’s Smokefree restaurant ordinance back in the early 90’s which helped get California to pass its Smokefree workplace and restaurant laws. She has also been involved with the Framework Convention Alliance which helped pass the world’s first public health treaty, related to deal with the global destruction caused by the to***co industry.

Seeking some “secret sauce” that could further advance positive change in the world she stepped into the world of the Shaman who dreams the world into being. All creation is sacred and interrelated. Misuse of any of creation reverberates throughout creation. The commercial use of to***co is a misuse of a sacred plant, putting it on the altar of profit rather than as an offering to carry prayers to spirit.
