Wintertime means less sunlight, but it doesn’t always mean shorter days. It’s common to add holiday travel, gatherings, and obligations to already busy schedules, which can cause more stress on the whole family.

Instead, taking a note from Chinese medicine, for which winter is the season for slowing down and asking less of ourselves and our children (and thus, being better prepared for a new year), can be a key to staying healthy this cold and flu season.

It’s common knowledge that stress and lack of sleep hinder our body's ability to heal themselves, but it is less common to actually apply that knowledge to how we build our family’s schedules.

Make rest a priority by trying to keep kids on a consistent sleep schedule relative to and appropriate for their age, and watch for signs of impending burnout in all family members.

In my house, we think it is better to take a day off to get our ZZs, than have a family shutdown when the flu hits hard.

And most of us give it the old college try to get those required cups down.

Tired, always cold and forgetting things???

In Chinese medicine, these are a few of the signs of Kidney Qi (energy) Deficiency and are similar to adrenal fatigue.

The adrenals are small, triangular-shaped glands located on top of both kidneys. Adrenal glands produce hormones that help regulate your metabolism, immune system, blood pressure, and response to stress. 🔺🔺

When they are taxes over time, we start feeling BURN OUT. 😔

"Just tell them what you want about your adoption. Let them know I'm grateful you were my FIRST option."

When raising an adoptive child, this is the most important thing for your child to understand.

I can't tell you how many times I have gotten the tilted head and I'm sorry look when I tell people that we adopted. There lies in the hurtful and WRONG assumption that I couldn't have kids.

Just how do you think this may feel to my daughter when she is old enough to know what the "pity tilt" is?

For a decade, I assisted infertile women in becoming loving mamas and I am glad to have been a part of that journey . . . but it wasn't mine.

I choose this unique and extraordinary commitment to my child.

I am learning:

· about the trials and tribulations of black hair 🙎🏿

· to endure criticism and judgment from members of the black community

· how to navigate and hopefully evoke change in a world of racial injustice

· to identify racial biases in the education system and even with friends/family

I belong to a fantastic community of like-minded people who share the same worries, concerns and celebrate similar victories and events and it is truly magical! ✨✨

Absolute bliss . . .

Feeling down, anxiety getting the best of you . . . I have a patch for that!

The holiday season is just around the corner and this often breeds anxiety and for many depression

This is more about emotional stress than physical stress of the body and it often has to do with expectations

- Where do we spend the holidays?

- How do we create our own traditions?

- What do I cook?

- What do I buy everyone?

- Is it safe enough to travel?

Trust me, I experience this too and my family has had the same routine for 25 years!!! 🤣

When in need I turn to the Nirvana patch

It has the ability to stimulate:

- dopamine - the happy neurotransmitter!

- oxytocin – that amazing hormone that bonds us to our kids

- adrenal function – helps regulate stress response

National Adoption Day is just around the corner and I wanted to give a well-deserved shout-out!

Authors like these ladies and so many more make the conversation about EASIER and FUN!

Evelyn is still just 4 1/2 and doesn't quite comprehend the big picture of adoption, but she understands that she is BROWN and mom is PINK. More importantly, she knows she is loved and my baby no matter what!

The latest added to our collection But I Don't Look Like You is now available on Amazon and this one is extra special because it was written by my friend's daughter who is an amazing teacher and role model for adopted kids everywhere.

Thank you, Kelsey! And to all the brave, selfless mamas who recognized they could not give their kids the life they deserved, I am in awe of you and specifically to Mama Ashley, I am so very grateful for my beautiful girl.
