As January draws to a close and New Year's goals are going strong (right?), it's a good time to make sure preventative exams are a priority this year. January is Cervical Cancer Awareness month, and this type of cancer is preventable by getting the HPV vaccine. Schedule a routine pap smear with your provider or click the link to find out about FDA-approved self-collection of HPV samples. As always, please discuss with your medical provider to make the best choice for you. https://www.nccc-online.org/cervical-health-awareness-month/

A very important conversation that needs to continue with our medical providers.

Menopause isn’t just hot flashes, and Black women deserve better information, better care, and real support.

Our President & CEO, Joy D. Calloway, spoke with Essence Magazine about the realities Black women face navigating perimenopause and menopause from fear and cultural silence to intimacy, mental health, and workplace challenges.

Joy shared her own vulnerability, reminding us how often Black women put their health last, not because we don’t care, but because we’re carrying everything else. She also named something many of us feel but don’t always recognize: we’ve normalized feeling “off” for so long that we don’t always realize when something is wrong.

Through it all, she returned to Power in the Pause, a space for education, community, and reclaiming menopause as a reset, not a decline.

This conversation matters. And we’re just getting started.

Of course, they saved the best for last. It was an honor, as always, to walk in the annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Parade. We embrace his quote, "Life's most persistent and urgent question is- What are you doing for others?" as we continue to be advocates for health equity in the San Diego community.
