The green ribbon is used for kidney disease awareness. There are many kinds of kidney disease including chronic kidney disease (CKD), diabetic kidney disease, IgA nephropathy, polycystic kidney disease (PKD), simple kidney cysts, kidney infection (pyelonephritis), and kidney stones.

The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) notes that “you are at greater risk for kidney disease if you have diabetes or high blood pressure.” Also, “kidney disease is often referred to as a ‘silent disease,’ because there are usually no symptoms during its early stages. In fact, as many as 90% of Americans who have chronic kidney disease (CKD) don’t know they have the disease until it is very advanced.”

March is National Kidney Month in the United States. The 2nd Thursday in March is used annually for World Kidney Day.

The red awareness ribbon is the color used for stroke awareness.

According to the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH) “Each year in the United States, there are more than 800,000 strokes. Stroke is a leading cause of death in the country and causes more serious long-term disabilities than any other disease. Nearly three-quarters of all strokes occur in people over the age of 65 and the risk of having a stroke more than doubles each decade after the age of 55.” The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke is the division of the NIH that provides education, brochures, and other information on strokes.

There is an acronym “BE FAST” used to help remember the signs of stroke. The stroke acronym means balance, eyes, face, arm, speech, and time.

BALANCE – Balance loss or loss of coordination
EYES – Eyesite changes: Loss, blurred, or double vision
FACE – Face drooping or numbness
ARM – Arm weakness or numbness in arms or legs on one side
SPEECH – Speech difficulty: slurred speech or hard to understand
TIME – Time for Help: If you experience stroke symptoms, it is important to quickly get medical care

Annually every May 8th is World Ovarian Cancer Day. The teal awareness ribbon shows support for ovarian cancer.

5 Key Facts
1. All women are at risk of ovarian cancer
2. Awareness of the early warning signs of the disease could save lives
3. Diagnosis at an early stage vastly improves a woman’s chance of survival
4. Ovarian cancer is often diagnosed at a late stage.
5. Many women mistakenly believe the cervical smear test (Pap test) will detect ovarian cancer

Ovarian cancer has the lowest survival rate of all gynecologic cancers and is characterized around the world by a lack of awareness of symptoms and late-stage diagnosis.

Symptoms of ovarian cancer can often be confused with other less serious conditions such as gastrointestinal disorders. Symptoms include:
- Increased abdominal size / persistent bloating (not bloating that comes and goes)
- Difficulty eating, feeling full quickly, or loss of appetite
- Abdominal or pelvic pain
- Needing to pass urine more urgently or more frequently going to the bathroom
- Bleeding after menopause
- Weight loss with no explanation
- Change in bowel habits like constipation or diarrhea

Ovarian cancer is diagnosed annually in nearly a quarter of a million women globally and is responsible for 140,000 deaths each year. Statistics show that just 45% of women with ovarian cancer are likely to survive for five years compared to up to 89% of women with breast cancer.

Inspiration can come from unexpected places. Awareness Angels started in 2012 with this altered bathroom sign which was located in a hallway near a University of Washington cancer clinic. After passing it several times in one day, the idea formed to create angels holding a different color awareness ribbons. I still wonder about the person who walking by the door and decided to pull out & place the sticker.

The white awareness ribbon shows support for teenage pregnancy awareness. May is teen pregnancy prevention month per Youth.gov. Here is information about US teenage pregnancy prevention from their website:

Teen pregnancy prevention is a national priority. Despite declines in teen pregnancy and birth rates in the U.S., the national teen pregnancy rate continues to be higher than the rates in other Western industrialized nations.

Racial and ethnic disparities remain, with higher rates of teen pregnancy for Hispanic and non-Hispanic black adolescents than non-Hispanic white adolescents.

Teen pregnancy prevention is a major public health issue because it directly affects the immediate and long-term well-being of mother, father, and child. Teen pregnancy and childbirth contribute significantly to dropout rates among high school females, increased health and foster care costs, and a wide range of developmental problems for children born to teen mothers.

DonnaBellas Angels is in partnership with AwarenessGallery.com to provide royalty use of the Awareness art images for fundraising or cause awareness use. The should benefit a non-profit or patient and/or caregiver support. For cause awareness, it should promote a greater understanding and education for public benefit that would be enhanced by the use of the art.

For example, Team Andre used the Blue Awareness Ribbon for their ALS team walk shirt. They emailed the sample art to the right prior to printing. Andre gave us this feedback:

"My name is Andre Williams Sr. and as an ALS patient I was honored to have DonnaBellas Angels art work on our T-shirts for our ALS walk. Just having the Ribbon and Angel showing support for ALS will help Team Andre spread ALS Awareness. Thanks again DonnaBellas Angels for your support. "
