WELLNESS WEDNESDAY
The Beauty of Living a Life of Service
There’s a quiet strength in a life built around service. It’s not about grand gestures or public praise. It’s about showing up — consistently, humbly, with a heart that asks, “How can I help?”
Living a life of service doesn’t make you smaller. It makes you deeper. It opens your eyes to what truly matters: people, connection, purpose. The more you give, the more you understand that fulfillment doesn’t come from what you take, but from what you contribute.
Service turns ordinary moments into meaning. It transforms work into impact, and compassion into action. It softens pride and sharpens empathy. And in serving others, you end up discovering yourself — not as the center of the world, but as part of something much greater.

OCTOBER IS BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH
After breast cancer surgery or radiation, lymph nodes (especially under the arm) may be removed or damaged. These nodes normally drain lymph fluid from the arm, chest, and breast area. When that drainage system is disrupted, fluid can accumulate — causing lymphedema, typically in the arm, hand, or chest wall on the affected side.
Signs and Symptoms
• Persistent swelling in the arm, hand, or chest
• Heaviness, tightness, or aching
• Decreased flexibility or range of motion
• Skin thickening or “pitting”
• Infections (like cellulitis) due to impaired immune drainage
Prevention and Management
• Early detection: The earlier it’s recognized, the easier it is to manage.
• Compression therapy: Wearing fitted sleeves or garments to reduce swelling.
• Manual lymphatic drainage (MLD): Specialized gentle massage to move fluid.
• Exercise: Light, regular movement promotes lymph flow (e.g., arm lifts, walking).
• Skin care: Keeping the area clean and moisturized to prevent infection.
• Avoiding strain: No heavy lifting or blood pressure checks on the affected arm.
• Swimming

Lymphatic drainage massage can help improve several skin conditions, mainly by reducing inflammation, clearing toxins, and boosting circulation in the lymphatic system. Here’s a clear rundown of which conditions can benefit and why:
________________________________________
1. Acne (especially inflammatory types)
• How it helps: Reduces swelling, removes waste products and excess sebum, and supports immune response.
• Result: Less redness, faster healing of breakouts, and a calmer complexion.
• Note: Works best alongside good skincare and hygiene—shouldn’t be done on actively infected or cystic acne.
________________________________________
2. Rosacea
• How it helps: Encourages fluid drainage and reduces facial puffiness that can worsen redness.
• Result: Smoother skin tone and less visible flushing.
• Note: Gentle technique is critical—too much pressure can irritate sensitive rosacea-prone skin.
________________________________________
3. Eczema and Dermatitis (non-infectious types)
• How it helps: Reduces inflammation and supports skin detoxification.
• Result: Can ease swelling and itchiness when done gently.
• Note: Avoid areas with open sores or active irritation.
________________________________________
4. Puffy Eyes and Facial Swelling
• How it helps: Stimulates lymph flow around the eyes and cheeks.
• Result: Noticeably reduced puffiness, smoother under-eye area.

✅ Good reasons to call a lymphatic drainage therapist
• Post-surgery recovery — Especially after cosmetic or orthopedic surgeries (like liposuction, tummy tuck, mastectomy, knee replacement). It helps reduce swelling, scar tissue, and fluid buildup.
• Chronic swelling (lymphedema) — If you notice persistent puffiness in your legs, arms, or face that doesn’t respond to elevation or compression.
• After illness or infection — If your body feels sluggish or you’re dealing with post-viral fatigue, as lymphatic drainage can support immune recovery.
• Sinus congestion or puffiness — For people with chronic sinus issues, facial swelling, or allergies.
• Water retention or bloating — Especially if it’s accompanied by a heavy, “stuck” feeling in the body.
• Detox or immune support — During lifestyle changes (diet, stress reduction, etc.) when you want to boost circulation and reduce inflammation.
• Post-cancer care (with medical clearance) — After lymph node removal or radiation, but only under doctor supervision.

Living with fibromyalgia can be a daily challenge, but it also brings the opportunity to understand our bodies and minds on a deeper level. Manual Lymphatic has proven to be an effective tool for managing the symptoms of fibromyalgia. This massage directly activates the parasympathetic nervous system, causing relaxation, and the gentle stretching of the skin and fascia relieves pain, tenderness and stiffness. Together, we can create a community of resilience and hope.

WHY IS THERE EXCESS FLUID BUILD UP AFTER SURGERY
After surgery, it’s common for extra fluid to build up around the area that was operated on. This fluid is called lymphatic fluid, and here’s why it happens:
• Small vessels get cut: Surgery often cuts tiny lymph vessels. Unlike blood vessels, they don’t close off easily, so they can leak fluid into the tissues.
• Normal healing response: Your body sends extra fluid and immune cells to the area to help it heal. That means there’s more fluid than usual in the tissues.
• Drainage problems: If lymph nodes or vessels were removed or damaged during surgery, the fluid can’t drain the way it normally would.
• Empty spaces inside: When tissue is moved or removed, little pockets (called “dead space”) can form under the skin, and fluid collects there.
Most of the time, this fluid buildup is the body’s natural way of healing. Doctors may drain it if it’s uncomfortable or if too much collects, but in many cases, your body slowly reabsorbs it on its own.

WELLNESS WEDNESDAY
Grounding, also called earthing, is the practice of making direct contact with the earth’s surface—walking barefoot on grass, soil, or sand, or using grounding mats indoors. Here are the main benefits people report, supported by emerging research:
1. Stress and anxiety reduction
• Physical contact with the ground can calm the nervous system.
• Some studies suggest it lowers cortisol levels (the stress hormone).
2. Better sleep
• Grounding may help regulate circadian rhythms, leading to deeper, more restful sleep.
3. Reduced inflammation and pain
• Contact with the earth may help neutralize free radicals, which are linked to chronic inflammation.
• People with arthritis or chronic pain sometimes report relief after grounding.
4. Improved circulation
• Grounding can support better blood flow, which benefits the heart and muscles.
5. Faster recovery
• Athletes sometimes use grounding to speed up healing after intense exercise.
6. Mood and mental clarity
• Spending time barefoot outdoors often lifts mood, improves focus, and reduces fatigue.

Living with lymphedema can be challenging, but staying active is key to managing your health and well-being. Here are some effective ways to incorporate movement into your routine: 1. Start with gentle stretching exercises to improve flexibility. 2. Consider swimming or water aerobics, which provide resistance without strain. 3. Engage in low-impact activities like walking or cycling to enhance circulation. 4. Explore yoga or Pilates for strength and stability. Always listen to your body and consult with a healthcare professional before beginning any new exercise plan. Let us focus on moving forward together.

WHAT HAPPENS When you sit still for long periods — like on a long flight or at a desk — your calf muscles aren’t contracting much.
Here’s what happens:
1. Lymph relies on movement. Without calf squeezes, there’s very little external pressure on the lymph vessels in your legs.
2. Gravity works against you. Lymph fluid tends to pool in the lower limbs.
3. Valves can’t help if nothing’s pushing. The one-way valves in lymph vessels need an upward push to close properly and move fluid toward the trunk.
4. Fluid builds up. This leads to swelling (peripheral edema) and a heavy-leg feeling.
Even small, regular movements — like ankle circles, standing up every 30–60 minutes, or walking a few steps — can restart that “muscle pump” action and keep both blood and lymph flowing.
If you want, I can also give you a simple calf-pump activation routine you can do at your desk or during travel that keeps lymph moving efficiently.

WELLNESS WEDNESDAY
WHY EATING LOCAL PRODUCE CAN HELP YOUR IMMUNITY
Eating local isn’t just good for the planet—it’s a power move for your immune system.
• Fresher = stronger. Vitamins fade fast once food is picked. Local produce skips the cross-country truck ride, so you get max immune-boosting nutrients.
• Nature’s timing is perfect. Seasonal foods give your body exactly what it craves—like vitamin C–rich fruits in winter, or cooling, hydrating veggies in summer.
• Good bugs, good gut. Fresh, local produce carries natural microbes from the soil that strengthen your gut—and since most of your immune system lives there, that’s a win.
• Less junk on your plate. Local food usually needs fewer preservatives and sprays, which means less junk for your body to fight off.
Bottom line: eat local, and you’re not just supporting farmers—you’re stacking the deck for your own health.
