Thanks for sharing my story (from 2021) Mind Menace! Next time, just don’t forget to give credit! 😉♿️❤️
After two years filled with applications, interviews, and countless rejections, I began to doubt myself due to the negative comments and messages I received. I thought I might never work as a bedside nurse again. Just when I was about to give up, I had one last interview for a position in a Mother/Baby Unit at a local level 1 trauma center. Given my past experiences, I assumed they would see my disability and decide against hiring me. To my surprise, when I mentioned my wheelchair, the response was different from what I expected. They said, “I don’t see why being in a wheelchair would impact your ability to deliver good nursing care in the slightest...plus, you’re the perfect height to catch.” 😉
I was absolutely stunned. I kept thinking, “They must have made a mistake,” or “Maybe I misheard them.” I was so shocked that I hardly told anyone until I had my orientation schedule in hand. But it was real, and I didn’t mishear a thing. On Monday, I will begin my orientation as a nightshift staff nurse on the Mother/Baby Unit, and I’ll be the hospital’s very first RN on wheels. 🤗 I still can’t shake the feeling that I’m going to wake up from this amazing dream. Please keep me in your thoughts as I transition into this very different specialty! Stay tuned for my journey back into the world of bedside nursing, ON WHEELS! 😷♿️
