Essential tremor is the most common movement disorder, a group of neurological conditions that disrupts the body’s ability to control its motions. The condition affects more than 60 million people worldwide, and nearly half of them go untreated. As essential tremor progresses and medication no longer controls the tremor, it can severely impact even the simplest tasks of daily life, such as eating, drinking and writing. Fortunately, Sharp now offers a treatment called MR-guided focused ultrasound, a one-time, noninvasive outpatient procedure that uses ultrasound waves, guided by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), to treat the areas of the brain that cause tremors. For some patients, a surgical procedure called deep brain stimulation is another option in treating essential tremor.
