As the first born daughter to Mexican immigrants, I learned that I had to get things done for my family.
I became
✅ the translator
✅ the appointment scheduler
✅ the fill out all important forms (school registration, government forms, etc)
I also learned
✅ to suppress my emotions and needs (I was too worried about managing others’ emotions to keep myself safe)
✅ to not add any additional stress to my parents (they were already stressed out!)
✅ doing good in school made those around me happy
I didn’t realize until much recently that I was living in survival stress - literally in functional freeze.
Despite me doing well in life by society’s standards (graduated from Cal, got a good job, purchased a home, married and had kids), my mental, emotional and physical health gave out.
I could no longer continue to carry all the emotions, the life force energy that I had suppressed as a little girl to survive.
I share this story because too often we focus on academic success, and while that is important, true success is a healthy nervous system that allows us to thrive and not be in survival mode.
If you work with parents, teachers, para-educators, campus safety officers, parent engagement specialists, I offer a series of workshops that create awareness on challenging student behaviors and what we can do to support authentic student engagement from a place of thriving and not surviving.
Reach out as I only work with a few schools every academic year.
I’ll also be working directly with moms online, so stay tuned for upcoming offerings.
