Minimizing scarring after surgery is a combination of good surgical technique, proper wound care and subsequent scar treatment.
While there is a significant genetic component (some patients tend to develop hypertrophic scars), there are factors that can be controlled and optimized to minimize scarring.
While the surgeon’s work sets the foundation, avoiding early tension (no excessive range of motion of the arms) during the post operative period is of paramount importance. Your surgeon will give you instructions regarding cleaning and how to change your dressings if needed.
In the early phases of wound healing (days after surgery), avoiding sun exposure is critical. In addition, the use of clinically proven scar therapies, such as silicone gels and sheets and massaging of the scars can assist (weeks after surgery).
Finally, more advanced techniques such as micro needling with PRP, red light therapy and/or laser resurfacing can be used at later phases if required(months after surgery).
