Today is Small Business Saturday ✨
It’s been a whole month and a few weeks since I started my mama month. I feel great physically, and very at peace with my postpartum self [see those sweet snuggles above]. I definitely developed perfection paralysis which prevented me from sharing here until everything was “perfect”...which we know is not exactly realistic...

Just like birth, babies and life, businesses are never fully grown and always changing...

So, today I’m going to walk through our packages in stories and how to order while we have a discount!

Meet Kyla, I’m the mama and creative curator behind Mama Month.
🌱
I’m the proud mama to two girls, ages 5 and 3, and am expecting our third baby any day now. I’ll be sharing my journey here, as I embark on my first Mama Month with our new curated care packages.
🌱
My story is not uncommon, I have experienced the postpartum struggles that befall many modern mamas...though at the time I didn’t realize I had any other option. I had my babies, “recovered” for a few days and then quickly jumped back into my normal routine without giving myself adequate time to truly rest and recover from pregnancy and birth. My transition into motherhood was pretty seamless from the outside looking in. I have a career in childcare, so taking care of tiny humans was no problem for me, I was lucky in that way. However, what I realized with the help of Courtney, is that taking care of myself was where I fell short.
🌱
Within the first year after each of my girls were born, I was burnt out. I experienced anxiety and depression, along with physical pain and fatigue. Luckily I had reconnected with Courtney, who had seen these postpartum problems countless times with her acupuncture clients. It soon became clear that I didn’t take advantage of the crucial postpartum window to heal my body and that eventually caught up with me.
🌱
I’m excited to experience a healing and restful Mama Month with my next baby, and recognize how lucky I am to have access to support and alternative healthcare and wellness. There are countless ways mothers are encouraged to engage in self care, but many aspects of self care require access to time, help, or money that many just don’t have. Mama Month is one small way modern mothers can benefit from some of the practices of the Golden Month. My hope is that we can bring these deeply healing products to every mama in need...while honoring the history of these sacred and restful postpartum traditions.
🌱
Stay tuned to take a peek into our packages, learn more about how we’re giving back to the community and follow along as I embark on my own Mama Month very soon...

What is Mama Month?!

Mama Month is a curated box of postpartum healing essentials based on the Golden Month tradition.

Traditionally, new mothers spend the first month postpartum in bed: resting, healing, nourishing with soups & broths, drinking healing teas and herbal remedies, being cared for by family, keeping warm and bonding with baby.

These postpartum traditions exist across many cultures, all of which offer meaningful and sacred practices that have been passed down through generations. Mama Month emphasizes practices from Chinese and other East Asian traditions that were studied by our founder, Courtney Moore, a certified licensed acupuncturist with over 10 years of experience. In her work as an acupuncturist, Courtney saw a need for in home postpartum care that was accessible and medicinal, and thus she carefully curated this box to honor the practice of postpartum rest while bringing its healing benefits to to modern mamas.

See our next post to hear more about her reasons for bringing Mama Month off of the table and into your home!

A little inspiration for those expecting and birthing new life during these uncertain times. It might feel strange to embark on new beginnings right now and trusting the timing of it all might feel overwhelming, but we can take comfort in knowing that our bodies and our babies know how and when to birth and begin ✨

In addition to rest, nutrition and herbal support are cornerstones of the Golden Month tradition 🍲

There are countless recipes for traditional soups, stews, broths and teas.

Foods that are traditionally recommended during the postpartum period are cooked (not by mama) and served warm, so that they are easy to digest and your body can extract the maximum nutrients without any extra work.

In Chinese medicine, daily “confinement soups” are especially encouraged. These soups contain good chicken stock or other broth enriched with traditional herbs and augmented with rice and easy to digest vegetables.

The Mama Month Care Package includes healing Soup Herb packets to be use to enhance soups and broths. Also included are Goji berries, powerful little snacks full of antioxidants that balance inner body energy (Qi) and tonify the blood.

We also include modifications for vegetarian or vegan diets as well as herb/drug interactions.

Check out our stories for some of our favorite recipes and links to traditional nutritional resources 📖

Mama Month was born out of the desire to provide mamas with a safe and effective postpartum recovery option they could use in the comfort of their own homes. In many cultures that follow these postpartum confinement traditions, new parents have support, time and resources around them. But in our western culture, many of us are living far from family, with little or limited support, stretched thin from work and other responsibilities...and while there are options to pay for services like postpartum doulas or night nannies, those options can be expensive and are cost prohibitive for many.

We wanted to bring a small piece of this postpartum practice, specifically the herbal remedies found in the Chinese tradition, to mamas who otherwise don’t have postpartum support. We also wanted to provide a way for loved ones to give support to mamas in need. In these strange times of social distancing, when we’re even more isolated from our communities and access to care, this support is even more vital.

We’ve seen many new parents get flattened by postpartum, our very own .sullivann being one of them. Mama Month is one small way we can provide healing and uplift new parents during this transformative time✨

REST 💤 ⁣

The first and arguably most vital pillar of your Mama Month. ⁣

Rest is essential for your body to heal. Receive support from your family, friends, birth/postpartum workers and neighbors to ensure your Mama Month is as restful for you as possible. If there’s ever a time in your life to be taken care of, these next 4-6 weeks should be it. ⁣

Sleep when your baby sleeps, stay horizontal as much as possible, eat nourishing foods, and avoid going outside - there’s a reason this is called the “Confinement Month” in Asian cultures. Keep your diet full of broths, soups, healthy fats, and fiber. And stay hydrated! ⁣

We know not everybody has this luxury, and hope that these restful postpartum practices become as mainstream and accessible to everyone. ⁣

Link in our bio to our founders words on why she sought to solve this need for more postpartum care. ⁣

Congee is our absolute favorite postpartum breakfast. Read more here!

Congees have been in my orbit lately. My husband has been cooking them in our Instant Pot with duck. Beata and I were just having a conversation about making congees with millet, and I’ve just spent a weekend with 12 women acupuncturists, and what did we eat for breakfast? A warming congee made wi...
