Went to San Diego this week for Society for Neuroscience’s annual conference. It was a whirlwind of posters, presentations, symposia and booths. Met lots of new contacts and proliferated a ton of new neurons in my hippocampus through my effortful and diverse learning. I took in a lot of new information and am reinvigorated to write about my first love- the brain. The tech has really changed since I was in the lab 10 years ago so it’s good to do stuff like this to stay current in my field. I also kind of enjoyed 3 nights in a hotel away from my kids…

My latest blog post on how deep breathing works in the body and brain.

“Take a deep breath.” We’ve all heard this old adage at some point, but you may not know that it is grounded in some really solid science. Deep breathing is one of the best tools we all have at our disposal to center the body and mind and regain composure. You can do it anytime, anywhere, it i...

"Until just a few years ago, no major funding agencies in North America or Europe required grant recipients to use both sexes in animal studies". This article doesn't mention the shocking fact that many drug trials reach human phases having never been tested on a female animal. Female hormones are not a complication that can be excluded from research for simplicity. When I worked in the lab we were proud to study naturally cycling female rats but we were certainly the exception rather than the rule. Its time that all scientists understand that choosing to exclude females from animal studies is not ethologically valid or justifiable.

One of the most deep-seated misconceptions about the human psyche is that men are simple and women are complicated ([ 1 ][1]). Gender psychology scholars trace this belief back to at least the 19th century, when the long-standing view that women were inferior versions of men started to fall out of f...
