PETITIONS & GOD NAMES

Within the psalm magic tradition there is a historically underutilized aspect of working with specific names of God to produce certain magical or mystical effects. I say underutilized because in my own research I discovered biblical scholars (mainly Protestant) who dismissed the idea of God’s word having inherent power as superstitious. So even the occult texts related to the psalms, especially once like Godfrey Selig, do not properly unpack this venerable and potent tradition.

Much of my work on the hoodoo front has been to reclaim that in a practical way. In my upcoming course with La Sirena, we will show a simple but effective method of working with God names through the use of petition papers. This is not something to miss!

PETITION PAPER 411

People who do not practice hoodoo or another ATR may not be aware of this, but full-sized mojo hands are not the only way we actually deploy mojos. Another method is to make what Doc Aaron calls a flat mojo. There are way less ingredients than a typical mojo, but depending on the situation needing to be addressed, this is a mojo that is typically used in one’s shoe to maintain works of dominance. You are literally stepping on your target with every step you take.

Petition papers come in because you need something to LINK the mojo to your target. This can be their personal concerns. But more often it is a slip of paper with their name and a few other things. This slip of paper goes in between the cloth and then other ingredients are added and the whole thing is put in your shoe. This is just one of many ways to work a petition paper for a sneaky trick!

DID YOU KNOW?: PETITION PAPERS FOR SPIRITS

Most people probably do not think about this, but when something like a grimoire tells you to write a spirit’s sigil or pentacle on a “virgin parchment,” they are essentially instructing you to write a petition paper to that spirit and then take it through a lengthy and complicated ritual. This is one way to work, and it is valid. But it is seldomly practical and even ceremonial magicians Doc Aaron knows well will admit that it’s a lot of work to conjure spirits in their traditions.

Hoodoo is not like this. Yes, there are complicated rituals, but the MAJORITY of what rootworkers do is simple and effective. Part of why this is this way in rootwork is because we are seldomly concerned about conjuring spirits to visible appearance. We call spirits to work, not just show themselves.

PETITION PAPER “NOW YOU KNOW”

Most writings on petition or name papers focus on simplistic things like writing a target’s name a certain number of times, or repeating the word “love” in a specific pattern. Since Antiquity, however, petitions have been written, drawn or etched onto surfaces to also call spirits. There are traditions of Psalm Magic that do just this, both in and beyond the Jewish spiritual tradition. In the distant past these were primarily used in the form of clay bowls that would trap a spirit within a swirling petition or Hebrew or barbarous names.

In the upcoming class, Doc Aaron and La Sirena will show their ways of working with petition papers to conjure spirits, and not just for exorcistic purposes, but as a “landing pad” to give a preferred spirit a way of anchoring itself to you in real time. More to follow!

WHAT’S IN A NAME?

Name papers, or petition papers they are sometimes called, are a thing in Hoodoo and several other indigenous/folk magical traditions. They are a way to direct the energy and intention of a working to a specific end. There are even a book or two on the subject.

But here’s the thing: most of what you will find out here is very basic. Literally books that do nothing other than tell you how to write one. That’s wonderful if you are a beginner to occult practices. But most of us get tired of 101 stuff and want something deeper. The class Doc Aaron and La Sirena are teaching in March is a big step in that direction! We will not only go over how to create petition papers, but we will explore different ways both practitioners deploy these papers in their work. We will also be sharing some of our actual secrets of practice—things that we know no one else has shared before us. This is NOT a class to miss!
