“Bienvenidos al Desmadre (Welcome to the Chaos)” is an acrylic painting and part of the larger series Ancestral Download. The series examines felt sense and connection to ancestral land. The piece depicts a mash up of cultural references that range from ancient prehispanic to more contemporary imagery/products. At the center is an ancestral child with a snake helmet referencing natural cycles and Quetzalcoatl the feathered serpent associated with wind, air, art, and creativity. Atop his head is a warrior with a spear protecting and directing him towards the bounty of maíz. “Bienvenidos” is the Spanish word for welcome with maíz (corn) sprouting out, which references the food staple that sustained and grew Mesoamérica culture. The figure sits in a Nike Cortez which also references colonization and street brand associated with Chicano culture. The gesturing hand offers these figures a way of life, which is influenced by past, present and future. The left of the image is a bottle of Sq**rt with the symbolic glyph for water which references the fluidity of cultures ancient and contemporary. All in all the piece references my own journey and reflection of living in Mexico City aka el Desmadroso for a few years and learning about prehispanic culture, contemporary Mexa culture through the lens of Chicano identity. Though the show has come down the work still lives and can be found online in SF. Wishing you all happy holydays! Sincerely, Rayos Magos⚡️✨🙌🏽

It’s been a two weeks since I left my hometown San Jose, California. And already one week here in Toronto 🇨🇦. Already feels like time is flying by and we’ve already done so much to get here. This first week here has been monumental with many things to fill up our time and cross off our To-Do’s. As I reflect and slow down to the end of this year, I think about home and those closest to me. Thanks for supporting me and my wildest dreams of being an artist. My hopes for you is that you also find whatever motivates your dreams/passion projects this new year. Lmk how I can support you. For the new year my hope/dream is to find a new studio space to start up my arts practice again. Though not having a studio has never stopped me from creating. I will spend this wintery season reading, writing, reflecting, and creating on a more intimate scale. Stay tuned for whats to come. Warmly, Rayos ⚡️ Shouout to for the black and white pics 📸 with the studio closing pics 📸 and my mom for the driving off pics 📸

Part 1: Saying Goodbye. It has been a week since we left my hometown San José , California. Still reminiscing on the past few weeks of hanging with friends and saying goodbye. Much love to all the friends who got to see me off and say goodbye. You have inspired me in someway and your friendship gives me hope in the beauty of human connection. This isn’t a goodbye but a see you sometime soon. Stay in touch. It will take some time for us to adjust to the climate and 3hour time difference. Nonetheless come visit us in Toronto 🇨🇦 Wishing you all health and wellness going as we end the year and enter this next one. Warmly, Rayos ⚡️

The end of a legacy after 8 years at the Citadel Art studios. Today I handed in my keys and it felt bittersweet. I needed some closure with my space before letting her go. Walked into the cold warehouse without any sound or anybody around. I reflected on my fortune and opportunity to live life creatively. I reminisced on moments of being locked away in a cold room full of so much potential. I was driven to create and see the visions in my mind come to life. If you know me then you know that I take my art seriously because it is and has always been my center, my grounding point in a heavy world. Thus I encourage you to find your center, your peace, your passion project like I found mine. Backstory, I found the warehouse one day while taking a walk during work around the corner. Called the number listed on the building. Next day saw multiple studios but # 206 was my dream space. Then it came to fruition and I started my career as a studio artist. All in all I am forever grateful for the time and space we shared. Thanks friends, family, patrons, and supporters of my work. Without l y’all I wouldn’t be here sharing this. I write this as I journey into the next chapter of my life on the other side of the continent. Much love, Rayos Magos🙏🏽⚡️✨🙌🏽🥲🤘🏽

“Ricos Guisados por La Raza (Rich Dishes for the People/Race)”
is an acrylic painting of a larger series from the show entitled Ancestral Download, which has come and gone . This pieces is an ode to the traditional Mesoamerican dishes passed down from generation to generation. Despite colonization the Mexica and surrounding civilizations were able to preserve parts of their culture through their comida. At the top reads Ricos Guisados (Rich Dishes/Plates), which can be found throughout Mexican fondas, puestos and mercados. I took the reference photo of a food stall in Mexico when I was there in the beginning of the year. At the center is the top of a pyramid with an eagle, a symbol of attainment and spiritual connection to nature and the sun. To the left is a Golondrina (Mexican swallow) in flight heading to the center. To each sides of the pyramids reside agave and nopales which were a part of the cultural celebrations of Mesoamerica. At the bottom of the pyramid are hands in a offering gesture, which symbolizes this gift of tradition and food passed down from the gods to the people. Below the is the 8th symbol of Coatl (serpent/snake), which references Mexica calendar and the cycles of earthly changes. Below is an onlooker viewing the scene to which he is a part of and connected to via his drink Topo Chico agua mineral and quesadilla de hongos, nopales y queso.
The piece centers around the idea of Mesoamerican food and how it sustained the people despite colonization. Food for the people by the people. Therefore on this day of colonialism I choose to recognize the cultures that were here previously, who contributed to the rich cultural traditions and foods that we now enjoy, and the continued contributions of Brown labor and service to a country that was founded on brutality and genocide. I stand in solidarity with Indigenous Peoples of the Americas. My hope is that we recognize, acknowledge, and fight for the people. I am grateful to be here and give thanks for my family, community, and cultural practices that keep me grounded. In solidarity, Rayos Magos🙏🏽✨⚡️🙌🏽

WOW 🤩 what a CLOSING to my OPEN STUDIO/MOVING SALE! I am forever grateful and honored to everyone who came by today as well as last weekend. So just to give you a backstory I moved into my studio at the Citadel Art Studios back in 2018. I had found the warehouse which was a block away from my full-time job. One day I was walking by while working and saw the sign for artist studios for rent. Next day I called the number and made an appointment to see the art studios. I was shown multiple studio spaces but immediately fell in love with studio space #206 It has been a total of 7.5 years working in my studio creating multiple bodies of work. Most of what I’ve shown here. All in all I have learned a lot about my craft as an artist. The most influential thing to having a studio space was the ability to expand my practice in size, form, and experimentation. I began pushing the boundaries of what work I could make, which was the key to my success. Some would say I am stubborn but I believe that I am steadfast in my work ethic and ability to dream big. And now that I am moving away it feels bittersweet to say goodbye to my sanctuary/home where I have worked hours on end with no idea or clue about where my work would take me. And yet what has always inspired me to continue has been the community and network of friends, collectors, and clients that have supported me in this journey. Without you all I wouldn’t be where I am today. So from the bottom of my heart THANK YOU for being down with me and my art! Signing off, you’re local artist friend, Rayos Magos🙏🏽✨⚡️🙌🏽

“El Potencial de Elote (The Potential of Corn)” is a new painting that depicts a young matured elote (corn cob) that has reached its growth potential and broken through the husk, which defines catharsis as being a release of energy potential.
The elote is rooted in its grounded posture with arms bursting open to life as an expression of being released into the world. Within the corn is a warrior spirit sewn into the fabric of the elote, which is part of its DNA and heritage. From root to seed to full plant bloom we reach our potential through pressurized environments, which can be a metaphor for life’s journey. In Mesoamerican cosmovision, the birth cycle of maíz (corn) paralleled that of the human life cycle, which is why deities associated with the phases of maíz were praised and honored. Catch this piece in the group show CATHARSIS opening Friday Nov 22 Hope to see you there on the Eastside of San Jo! Warmly, Rayos Magos🙌🏽⚡️✨🤘🏽🌽🔥

“Pesado (Heavy)” is a new acrylic painting that was part of the series Ancestral Download my solo show that has come and gone The word “pesado” in Spanish means heavy but can take two forms as in something that is physically heavy and/or emotionally/mentally heavy. The trabajador (worker) is pulling the weight of ancient Mesoamerican sculptures representing various groups from the Olmecas to the Aztecas. Not only is he pulling the physical weight of these sculptures but also the emotional and mental weight of colonization, capitalism, and intergenerational trauma. Nonetheless the worker has una caja de cervezas (carton of beer) to celebrate the days work. Life is this beautiful delicate heavy balance, where you have to be aware of the weights that you carry in order to balance them daily. All in all this piece serves as a reflection on the resilience of people who work everyday physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually to keep it all together. The struggle is real. Stay vigilant. Warmly, Rayos ⚡️ Though the show is over and this piece is sold there are still other pieces available on the shop link
