1. For a child, play is their most important job. ✅ TRUE: In the OT world, we call play a child’s "primary occupation." It’s how they build the foundation for everything—muscle strength, problem-solving, and social-emotional skills!
2. Sitting in a "W" position is the best way for kids to build core strength. ❌ FALSE: "W-sitting" actually allows kids to "lock" their hips in place so their tummy muscles don't have to do the work. We always encourage "criss-cross" or side-sitting to get that core engaged and strong!
3. Picky eating is always just a child being stubborn or difficult. ❌ FALSE: Often, it’s not about "won’t," it's about "can't" yet. A child's unique sensory profile can make certain textures or smells feel overwhelming or even scary. We help make food feel like a safe adventure instead of a battle.
4. Learning to crawl is a vital "pre-reading" skill. ✅ TRUE: Crawling requires "crossing the midline," which gets the left and right sides of the brain talking to each other. This same brain-body connection is what helps eyes track words across a page later on!
5. Sensory processing differences are just a phase that kids always outgrow. ❌ FALSE: We don't "outgrow" our sensory systems, but we do learn how to navigate them! OT provides kids with the tools and strategies to manage a world that might feel too loud, too bright, or too fast.
