Lotus Life Balance Wheel

Spring is a natural season for reassessment. As the days lengthen and warmth returns, it becomes psychologically easier to shift habits, refocus priorities, and make meaningful changes.

The L.O.T.U.S. Life Balance Wheel is a simple tool to help you see where your life is flourishing — and where it may feel out of balance.

The LOTUS Areas:

L – Learning & Growth
Personal development, education, self-awareness

O – Occupational & Financial
Career, business, money management, stability

T – Time & Recreation
Hobbies, fun, rest, leisure

U – Understanding & Relationships
Family, friends, romance, community

S – Self-Care & Spirituality
Physical health, mental well-being, inner peace

How to Use It:
1. Rate each area from 1–10 based on your current satisfaction.
2. Plot your scores on a circular wheel.
3. Connect the dots and observe the shape. Is it balanced or uneven?
4. Adjust — identify one small, specific action to support the area that needs attention.

This isn’t about perfection. It’s about awareness. A wheel that rolls smoothly requires balance.

Repeat this exercise seasonally or annually to realign your time, energy, and focus with your goals.

Let this be the season you bloom with intention.

Prosperity Dumplings 🥟

Welcome the Lunar New Year with dumplings — a symbol of prosperity, abundance, and family unity. Their crescent shape resembles ancient Chinese silver and gold ingots, representing wealth flowing into the year ahead.

This year ushers in the Year of the Fire Horse — a time of bold action, rapid transformation, passion, and innovation. It favors courage and movement forward, while reminding us to balance high energy with steadiness to avoid burnout.

Making dumplings becomes more than a meal — it’s a ritual of intention.

The Filling (Balanced & Nourishing)

This recipe beautifully incorporates the five elements:
• Metal (Lungs) – White napa cabbage
• Wood (Liver) – Green bok choy
• Water (Kidneys) – Black shiitake mushrooms
• Fire (Heart) – Red carrots
• Earth (Spleen) – Yellow tofu skin

Blanch cabbage (10 seconds) and bok choy (5 seconds), cool, chop finely, and squeeze out excess water.
Mix with chopped tofu skin, soaked shiitakes, cellophane noodles, carrots, and seasoning:

Soy sauce, sesame oil, ginger, white pepper, sugar (or maple), and salt to taste.

🥟 Assemble

1–2 tsp filling in center of wrapper.
Moisten edge with water.
Fold into half-moon.
Seal tightly, removing air bubbles.

🔥 Fire Horse Chili Oil Dipping Sauce

To honor the Fire Horse energy, make or buy a bold red chili oil sauce balanced with numbing Sichuan pepper:

Chili oil + soy sauce + black vinegar + maple syrup + garlic + sesame oil + Sichuan pepper.
Top with scallions and sesame seeds.

Spicy heat + tingling spice = fire element in harmony.

Air Fry for Crispness

350–375°F for 4–6 minutes.
Lightly oil. Single layer only.
Flip halfway for even browning.

As you fold each dumpling, set an intention for prosperity — not just financial wealth, but vitality, courage, and alignment.

May this Fire Horse year bring bold steps forward and steady strength to sustain them.

Visiting Huntington Gardens for the Lunar New Year feels like stepping into the turning of the seasons. In mid-February, you can feel spring waking up, the camellias are showing color, the air feels softer, and there is a familiar hum of life starting over again.

The energy of the Fire Horse characterizes this year, symbolizing independence, creativity, and drive. This spirit of motion and renewal fits well with the garden’s landscape right now, everything seems more alive, and ready to burst forward.

The Lunar New Year marks more than just a calendar change; it’s nature’s reminder that cycles of growth and rest are inseparable. Standing among the blossoms and bamboo, it is easy to feel how each season passes its energy to the next. The Fire Horse reminds us to carry that energy forward boldly, to take on new adventures, and to create and embrace change as part of our rhythm.

There is something grounding about celebrating this transition in a space that itself embodies the balance of art and nature. The Huntington feels like the perfect place to honor where we’ve been, and to quietly welcome what’s about to bloom next.

Late Winter Alchemy

As we move from late February into early March, we enter a liminal season — not quite winter, not yet spring. It’s a potent time of esoteric rebirth, quiet detoxification, and deep energetic transition.

Let this poem guide your reflection:

Cold ash turns to green,
March blood sheds the winter’s ghost,
Lotus breaks the frost.

Each line carries a sacred symbol:

✨ Cold ash – the residue of past cycles, old stories, and stagnant energy ready to be cleared.
🌕 March blood – the quickening pulse of life returning; a subtle inner stirring of strength and will.
🌸 Lotus – the soul blooming from the mud, rising through challenge into clarity and grace.

This is the time of rising cold — a paradox of stillness and momentum. Be with it. Let it work on you.

What are you shedding? What are you blooming into?

Welcoming the Season of Renewal

As the days slowly lengthen, bring the promise of spring indoors by growing a flower from a bulb. This simple, nourishing ritual is a beautiful way to focus on care, intention, and growth during the season of renewal.

How to grow a bloom indoors:
1. Choose a vase or jar. We love reusing recycled bulb vases as a yearly tradition to welcome spring.
2. Place your bulb (amaryllis or hyacinth work beautifully). If not using a bulb vase, surround the bulb with stones to keep it upright.
3. Fill with water—just below the bulb, not touching it. (Too much water causes rot!)
4. Set in a warm room with bright, indirect light.
5. Check water weekly, keeping it just under the bulb as roots grow.
6. Rotate or adjust to help the stem grow straight and tall.

While planting or refreshing the water, try this mantra:
“As days grow longer, my potential for growth and transformation expands.”

Let your bulb be a reminder: new life emerges slowly, quietly—and so can your intentions.

Valentine’s Self-Love Soul Bites

Whether you’re spending Valentine’s Day solo or sharing it with a partner, this season is an invitation to turn inward and tend to yourself with care. As spring begins to stir beneath the surface, self-love becomes an act of nourishment, presence, and delight.

Try this simple, wholesome recipe as a sweet way to celebrate you.

As you make these truffles, say aloud:
“I am my own first love. I nourish my body, embrace my heart, and delight in my own company.”

Ingredients
• 1 cup pitted Medjool dates (soak 10–15 minutes if dry)
• 1 cup walnuts
• ½ cup raw cacao powder
• 1 tsp vanilla
• Pinch of sea salt

To make
Process walnuts first, then add dates and blend until a sticky crumble forms.
If too crumbly, add 1–2 tsp water or a bit of coconut oil.
If too sticky, add a few more nuts or a little cacao.
Add cacao and vanilla, then pulse until combined.
Roll into 1-inch balls and coat with unsweetened shredded coconut.

Self-love isn’t about perfection — it’s about kindness, pleasure, and honoring yourself in small, meaningful ways. Savor the moment. You deserve it.

Lantern Crafting for the Return of Light

As February begins, we stand at the threshold between winter’s stillness and spring’s promise. Creating a lantern is a beautiful way to honor this transition—a symbol of the growing light, the shedding of the old, and the invitation for what’s to come.

Why craft a lantern now?
Lanterns symbolize hope, clarity, and renewal. The act of crafting and lighting your own invites brightness into your space and life. Whether you’re aligning with seasonal rhythms or Lunar New Year traditions, this practice celebrates the triumph of light over darkness.

The eight-pointed star lantern carries deeper meaning:
• Balance and rebirth
• Protection and guidance
• Cosmic order and inner clarity

Let your lantern be your guiding star—keeping you focused on new habits, intentions, and the light within.

✨ Winter Stargazing ✨
Early February offers some of the clearest, crispest skies of the year. As nature stills, we’re invited to do the same—to breathe, to reflect, and to gaze upward.

This is the season for quiet magic:

Step outside and look for Sirius—the brightest star in the night sky—and let it guide your spirit toward the light of spring.

Bundle up, bring a thermos of something warm, and journal beneath the stars.

Note the moon phase and ask yourself what’s ready to grow, shift, or rest.

Here’s a recent photo I took in Bisbee, AZ under a sky so clear you could see Orion, the Pleiades cluster, and the moon all at once. Pure wonder.

Pine Cone Bird Feeders
Help a bird out this February.

This simple, satisfying project is not only fun—it’s a lifeline for our feathered friends during the coldest part of winter. Packed with high-energy, high-fat nutrients, these pine cone feeders support birds as they survive chilly nights and prepare for spring migration or nesting.

Here’s what you’ll need:
• 1 large pine cone
• Twine or floss
• Unsalted, creamy peanut butter
• Birdseed mix
• Popsicle stick or spreading knife

Steps:
1. Attach a hanger: Weave floss firmly through the pine cone scales, leaving a loop at the top for hanging.
2. Spread peanut butter: Use your stick or knife to press peanut butter into all the grooves.
3. Roll in birdseed: Coat every sticky surface with seeds.
4. Optional chill: Pop it in the fridge for 30–60 minutes to help the seeds stick better.
5. Hang it up: Choose a high spot with cover (like near shrubs), and consider adding a shallow dish of fresh, unfrozen water nearby.

This cozy activity reminds us that spring is just around the corner. Save this post and share with a friend who loves birds, crafts, or winter nature magic.
