This National Family Caregivers Month, we join our community in recognizing and celebrating you. Remember: it’s okay to ask for help, take breaks and lean on community resources. You are not alone.

All newborn deliveries are special at Central Carolina Hospital’s Birth Center. And now we have a Special Delivery program to go along with them!

What is the Special Delivery program?

The Special Delivery program aims to reduce maternal mortality by providing a simple yet effective solution: by encouraging our new moms to wear a teal-colored wristband for six weeks after delivery, we can help to ensure that they receive timely and appropriate care for any potential complications that may arise.

How can a simple wristband help? Many patients make return visits to healthcare providers for pregnancy related complications without informing the provider of a recent delivery or pregnancy, which often results in misdiagnosis of illness or inaccurate treatment. By wearing these wristbands for the first six weeks after delivery, postpartum patients are more easily identifiable to their care providers. Alerting medical teams to your recent pregnancy helps to ensure faster recognition and treatment of any warning signs.

The wristbands also serve as a reminder to the patient, their families and friends, and other caregivers that your postpartum care matters – because your body is still healing and you’re still at risk for complications up to a year after giving birth.

Several states have “Blue Band Initiatives” that help to specifically identify patients that may be diagnosed or at high risk of pre-eclampsia, eclampsia and hypertension. The Special Delivery program is not meant to replace those initiatives but rather work alongside them for increased awareness of maternal and postpartum health.

Although it is the 3rd most common form of cancer in the United States, more people die from lung cancer than any other form of cancer. A simple lung cancer screening can help determine the health of your lungs and detect cancer early, when treatment is most effective. Take our Lung Health Risk Assessment to learn more about your lung health and talk to your provider if a screening may be needed: https://centralcarolinahosp.com/health-risk-assessment/lung-health?utm_source=facebook&utm_medium=organic&utm_campaign=16776_726Lng&utm_content=lcam

Congratulations to Wanda Chester, RT, Radiology Technologist, who retired today after 30 years of dedicated service to Central Carolina Sandhills Family Care, the longtime practice of Dr. Robert McConville.

In recognition of her contributions to the practice, the radiology suite at the practice was named the Wanda Chester X-Ray Suite in her honor.

Wanda has been with the practice since it opened its doors, said Anne McConville, Dr. McConville’s wife.

She “opened the doors of that practice with us in 1996 and has been there every day since,” Anne said. “She saw the building being built, walked in, wanted to help design the X-ray suite, and has run it ever since.”

“You are truly the most efficient and fastest X-ray technician I know, and the most accurate as well,” Dr. McConville told Wanda at a retirement reception today. “We appreciate all the other things you’ve done in the practice to help us out, besides doing X-ray, and we will miss you tremendously.”

“Patients, staff and providers love her,” said Pam Blevins, Practice Manager. “She has helped with other duties throughout the years, and we will all miss her.”

After today, Wanda will have more time now for her two daughters and two grandchildren.

Congratulations, Wanda! Enjoy your well-earned retirement!
