Just finished this book in a day and few hours! I have so much to say about this beautifully written memoir but I want to hold back because I want you to read this true story for yourself.

Having lived through this tragic time but more from the outside looking in, I felt so many emotions during Kim Cantin’s storytelling. We hosted many Westmont students during all the evacuations which made this time very real for us. This book is very therapeutic and left me with so much hope for humanity and how we are so interconnected.

Another takeaway that I’ve always known but it was expressed through this book with many examples is the veil is very thin between the physically living and those who have departed this life.

If you have read it I would love to hear your beautiful takeaways.

If you haven’t yet, I highly encourage it especially if you lived through the Thomas Fire and Montecito Mudslides.

Would love to share a story about how words have power… power to uplift and encourage and the power to tear down, stifle, and hurt.

I had a 1st grade teacher who compared my art piece to another student’s work. She said mine wasn’t as good as the other students. From 1st grade to age 51 years old, I believed I wasn’t artistic and very creative because of her words. I held on to a story someone else told, rather than rewriting that story. I knew myself to be creative in imagination, ideas, vision, and business but not with art or crafty projects.

I have a great group of friends who are so good at uplifting. We sometimes celebrate a birthday doing with a crafty creative outing and I would just say, “it’s not my thing. Go on without me.”

This past Friday, I went to Painted Cabernet a little reluctantly because of that old story in my head.

I had the biggest breakthrough!!

I LOVED the process of creating my OWN art. I gave myself permission that it didn’t have to be perfect but rather enjoy the experience and the journey. I realized I’ve been holding myself captive to an old story that does not serve me or others. I allowed my 1st grade teacher to take up space of what I can and can’t do.

My encouragement to you is to rewrite some old stories that don’t serve you and others. It’s about not letting others hold you captive in your creativity and beliefs. It’s about an experience of making something truly original. It’s about having breakthroughs at any age! Words have power! Use your words to uplifts and encourage others to see what is possible.

Creativity comes in many forms! Enjoy the journey!

Joyfully,
Kristin

Think back to your 5 year old self. What were you like? What did you love?

I’m reading Jenna Kutcher’s “How are you, Really?” and she has a chapter of how to hear yourself again. She takes you back to when you were 5 before the world/society started putting you in a box and began shaping you.

I took the opportunity this morning to journal some key questions:

“Picture your 5 year old self.”
(I had my Mom send me some pictures) It’s been a long time since I’ve thought of 5 yr old Kristin.

“What do you love?”
I love 5 year old Kristin for her playfulness and purity of heart. She could sit and play for hours, sing and make up songs, and imagine with her dolls and barbies. She connects with herself and others through play and creativity.

“What do you want?”
I wanted love and connection. I realize over the years my love language is Words of Affirmation and Quality time. My Mom had a beautiful way of showing love through Acts of Service, that is what she learned was important as a child. I wanted to play, I wanted her time. When I had friends to play with, it meant the world to me. It’s funny looking back at our childhood with a different lens.

“What is your 5 year old self whispering to you?”
Make play, imagination, and dreaming a priority. Create, connect, sing and have fun. She is whispering to not neglect an important piece of who she is and what she needs. She is reminding me to build this piece into her day/week and be PRESENT in play.

This was a powerful exercise. Most of the things we struggle with come from our early years. It felt good to go back and tell 5 year old Kristin what I love about her and what she has taught me as a 51 year old.
