We had a wonderful time celebrating our Cottage Health Volunteers at this year’s holiday brunch, organized to show our appreciation, connect with one another, and hear updates about the hospital.

Our volunteers bring so much heart, generosity, and spirit to Cottage Health, and we are truly grateful for all they do.

This holiday season, our NICU team arranged a special visit from Santa, giving families the option to capture their baby’s first holiday photo. Babies were photographed with stockings and knit beanies handmade by our volunteers.

Our Maternity unit also joined in the tradition, with every baby born in December receiving a handmade stocking as a keepsake for their family.

We’re grateful to our volunteers and teams who make these moments possible.

Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital is now offering histotripsy, an innovative non-invasive treatment for liver tumors. SBCH is one of the few hospitals in the country using this focused ultrasound technology—and the only provider between Southern and Northern California.

Histotripsy precisely targets and breaks down tumor tissue without heat, radiation, incisions, or needles. For many patients, it offers a new option when surgery isn’t possible.

Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital has been named a 2025 Top Teaching Hospital by The Leapfrog Group, a national leader in evaluating hospital quality and patient safety.

Out of thousands of hospitals nationwide, we are proud to be:
▪️ One of only 73 hospitals in the U.S. recognized

Our NICU team recently received a meaningful gift honoring the life and legacy of Vivian Buetel, a beloved NICU nurse whose compassion continues to make an impact even after her passing.

Vivian was an organ donor, and her generosity saved multiple lives. She was honored with a floral portrait created in her memory that adorned OneLegacy's Donate Life Rose Parade float.

One of her organ recipients partnered with OneLegacy to present the floragraph to the NICU team as a remembrance of the colleague, friend, and caregiver who meant so much to so many. Vivian’s family, colleagues, and two of her organ recipients were present for the presentation.

The floragraph is framed and displayed in the NICU as a tribute to Vivian and the many lives she touched.

A stomachache led five-year-old Miles and his family to Cottage Urgent Care, where the team quickly identified appendicitis and sent him straight to the Cottage ER. There they found exceptional medical care, comfort and compassion, and Miles made a fast recovery. Miles’ five-day stay in Pediatrics at Cottage was so positive, he keeps a memento box with his admissions bracelet, the teddy bear he received and his hospital gown.

From the Birth Center to the Mother Infant Unit, to Cottage Children’s Medical Center and Grotenhuis Pediatric Specialty Clinics, our staff is honored to offer care and compassion to children in all stages of their lives.

Founded in 1888, the not-for-profit Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital has been serving the community for more than 125 years.
