On December 9, 1987 the First Intifada, also referred to as the, “Stone Uprising” began in Gaza’s Jabalia Refugee Camp, an uprising that spread all throughout Palestine in response to over four decades of systematic oppression in the form of settler colonialism.

The inciting event was the murder of four Palestinians; Taleb Abu Zaid, 46, Issam Hamouda, 29, Shabaan Nabhan, 26, and Ali Ismail, 25, who were run over by a Zionist soldier at a checkpoint in the Jabalia camp, who framed the deliberate killing as an “accident”. Much like today, the killing of Palestinians by the Zionist entity is not “accidental”, though Zionist propaganda would suggest otherwise. As Palestinian feminists, we know that settler colonial states must intentionally, not accidentally, continue to steal our homes, our land, and our lives in order to succeed in their project. But like all cases of oppression, the Palestinian people have remained steadfast and continued to resist.

The First Intifada was a mass uprising, defined by the participation of women and young people all across Palestine, not just in Gaza. Palestinians created vast aid networks, student mobilizations, and led large scale economic boycotts against the occupation from Gaza to the West Bank. As one famous revolutionary song from that period declared: “In every village, house, and alley, our Intifada continues.”
