🎉 Big News! 🎉

Our Family Medicine Residency Program has earned continued ACGME accreditation AND continued Osteopathic Recognition 🩺 — with no Areas for Improvement (AFIs) or citations!!

✨ Why this matters:
ACGME accreditation is a national standard that ensures the highest quality in medical education and training. Osteopathic Recognition highlights our program’s commitment to whole-person, hands-on care that integrates body, mind, and spirit.

Achieving both - with no AFIs or citations - means our residents are learning in a program that not only meets but exceeds rigorous national standards, preparing them to provide excellent, compassionate care to the communities we serve.

As our newest class of residents wrap up their first rotations, we reflect on the 2025 White Coat & Pinning Ceremony — a cherished tradition marking their entry into both residency and our community.

With the Santa Cruz hills and Monterey Bay as the backdrop, first-year residents received their white coats and pins — symbols of trust, service, and the journey ahead. Second-year residents were honored with a pin recognizing their growth and dedication over the past year.

🕯️ The evening began with a reflection by Dominican Hospital Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Whitley, followed by heartfelt remarks from our Program Director, Dr. Zane, Hospital President Dr. Mickiewicz, and Designated Institutional Officer, Dr. Ivonye.
📜 Together, faculty and residents recited our Residency Compact — a shared promise to serve with integrity, grow through challenge, and care deeply for our patients and each other.

It was a beautiful celebration of identity, belonging, and the path forward in family medicine.

Thank you to our faculty, staff, and patients for supporting their growth. The future is bright and this is only the beginning. 💙

🎉 That’s a wrap on Orientation 2025! 🩺🌿

After weeks of training, onboarding, team-building, and deep dives into our community and clinics — our Family Medicine interns are officially off to their first rotations! 💪

From hospital tours and continuity clinic shadowing to simulations, Epic + Cerner training, ALSO, ACLS, POCUS, and so much more — Orientation laid the foundation for a journey rooted in service, equity, and community-based care.

We laughed, learned, practiced, and even made space for wellness and celebration.

To our new residents: you’ve already shown so much heart, curiosity, and commitment. We’re proud of you and can’t wait to see you thrive in this next chapter!

🌟 Clinic First in Action — Nationally Recognized, Locally Rooted! 🩺🌿

At the Region IX Clinical Excellence & Leadership Conference in Reno NV, our team proudly presented our pioneering Clinic First Family Medicine Residency model - designed and implemented at Santa Cruz Community Health.

Clinic First centers continuity clinic and patient relationships from day one of training - creating a residency experience grounded in real-world, community-based care.

🎙️ Dr. Salla Hennessy & Dr. Casey KirkHart shared how our model builds strong continuity, team-based care, and resident leadership.

Why Clinic First? Because it works:

✅ More time in clinic = deeper patient relationships
✅ Better continuity for both patients & residents

✅ Outpatient skill-building + leadership development early on

🎉 Proud to showcase our research posters a couple weeks ago at the 21st Annual UCSF Department of Family & Community Medicine Rodnick Colloquium!

Some of our Family Medicine Residency projects highlighted:

• Building sustainable residency-community partnerships through resident-led community medicine projects
• Integrating Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment with allopathic physician preceptors
• Enhancing patient safety by increasing event reporting among residents
• Examining patient- and resident-sided continuity in a new family medicine practice

This incredible event celebrates innovation, fosters collaboration, and creates cross institutional opportunities in family medicine. Honored to contribute to the future of community-focused care! 💙

🏥📅 Over the past couple weeks, our Family Medicine residents were proud to provide free sports physicals and EKG screenings at three high schools across Santa Cruz County. 🩺⚽

This multi-day effort supported over 650 middle and high school athletes in getting cleared for their upcoming sports seasons, all while promoting heart health and preventive care in our local communities.

A heartfelt thank you to the Santa Cruz County Office of Education, Golden State Orthopedics & Spine, Sutter Health, our faculty, and the incredible school staff, families, and volunteers who made this possible. Community care truly takes a team, and we’re honored to be part of it. 💜

We gathered a couple weeks ago to celebrate the holiday season with our incredible residents and faculty. 🎉 We had a taco bar, an ugly sweater contest, and lots of laughs!

As 2024 and recruitment season for our next class winds down, we’re reflecting on what makes our program truly special:

✨ Unique training in Point of Care Ultrasound (POCUS), Osteopathic Manipulation, customizations in electives in PGY2 and PGY3

✨ Diverse faculty and strong partnerships with Santa Cruz Community Health, Watsonville Community Hospital, and Salud Para La Gente

🌊 Ahoy from the Recruitment Retreat at Dream Inn in Santa Cruz! 🌟

Faculty, residents, and staff came together earlier this month to gear up to recruit our next class of residents! This recruitment-focused retreat was all about refining our process and ensuring we find applicants who share our commitment to advancing health equity.

Here’s a glimpse of what we covered: ✅ Deep dives into diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging (DEIB) to ensure a welcoming environment for all ✅ A look at our holistic recruitment process, emphasizing fit with our mission and transparency ✅ Mock interviews and discussions on Restorative Justice practices—ensuring fairness, inclusion, and support for all applicants ✅ Reflections on how to best select residents who will help us continue to serve underserved communities.
