I know this is my forever happy place, with one babe on my back and another in front. There is nothing more humbling than thinking about how this time is not forever — they will grow and grow and grow, and these babes I used to carry will be my fondest memory. I will hold them in different ways as they get bigger, but this time right now is so incredibly precious. ♾️💗

For those who don’t know me, my name is Carmen. I’m a mama, a wife, a flower enthusiast, a crafter of many things & master of none, and a postpartum doula. Becoming a mother changed my life, having my own doulas opened my eyes. These initiations have inspired me to nourish new mothers the ways they deserve, in ways we’ve forgotten.

You just spent countless hours in labor, your baby is finally earth-side, your body did the damn thing, and now it’s asking you for REAL nourishment. Not that cold apple juice + sandwich combo the hospital offers (🙏🏽), or even that super burrito or sushi you’ve been holding out on, but warm, mineral-rich, easily digestible food.

Rice Congee, or rice porridge, is an ancient meal with roots in China, served to restore strength in the elderly or in the case of illnesses. It is hydrating, restorative and easy to digest making it the perfect first meal for a new mother.

This dish will work well as both savory or sweet. has a DELICIOUS recipe for a sweet version in her Ayurvedic postpartum cookbook, Mama’s Menu. I made this recipe with my first-born in my crockpot, which came with me to the hospital, finished cooking while I was in labor, and was fresh & ready to go once my baby arrived. My nurses joked that I labored and cooked dinner. 😅 Anyone who knows me, knows that this is on brand for me. It’s really not a bad idea, and will smell like Christmas in your labor & delivery room. 🥰

Our body will let us know when we’re doing too much, too soon. Our baby’s needs will force us to stop what we were doing to be present with her. We’ll notice that when we’re rushing, forcing, everything feels that much more overwhelming.

There is nothing fast about postpartum. It’s not meant to be streamlined. It takes time for our body to heal, time to learn our babies signals, time for us to gain confidence in our new role as mama, time to discover who we are all over again — it may all take a lifetime. And more than time, this phase of life demands our presence. In a world where we’ve become accustomed to instant gratification, powering through and multi-tasking, the concept of embracing slowness can be difficult to accept. I know it was for me, and still is. But this is our gentle reminder to do just that: Embrace the slowness. Embody it for yourself and everyone else. It’s rich, and lush, and juicy, and full of all the good stuff that we’re sure to miss when we’re moving too fast.

Slow down, mama. Blink, and the moment is already gone. 💐

As doulas, we know deeply that you, as mama, already got this. That doesn’t mean that you need to do it alone. Support doesn’t make us “less than,” and there are no gold stars waiting for us for doing it all. With kind, gentle, nurturing support, we flourish more fully and with more grace. Another one because we are blessed to be out in the community like this!! It’s a huge part of what this work is about for me — doing the actual work goes hand in hand with taking time out to talk to our community members & letting them know what opportunities are out there waiting for them. I wholeheartedly love educating families who don’t know what a doula is, spreading the word that doula services are fully covered by Medi-Cal and many insurance plans now (this is still not mainstream knowledge!), inspiring new thoughts around “it’s okay to need help” because I come from “I can do it all myself” and genuinely just connecting with people.

Hi everyone!

My name is Carmen. I am a mother of two, and my family is my world. Becoming a mother is like eating the biggest slice of humble pie in existence, over and over and over. It has transformed my reality in every way, and I am finding just how foundational the roles of mothers are for the health of humanity.

For these reasons (and many more), I became a postpartum doula, and am offering my services all throughout Santa Cruz County. I believe that quality postpartum care is not a privilege afforded to wealthy families; it is VITAL and a NECESSITY for all mothers. I am proud to share that I accept Medi-Cal Insurance, where doula services are FULLY COVERED and absolutely FREE for you.
