Samantha K Smith STRONG Samantha K Smith has been newly diagnosed with leukemia (acute lymphoblastic leukemia) on January 21st, 2016.

Due to popular demand, a fundraising site has been set up for the Smith Family. They will be using these funds to help with gas expenses, groceries, and other needs that the family sees fit. Thank you so much for your support and helping us fight Samantha's cancer TOGETHER! https://www.gofundme.com/fqksx4c4

Just two weeks ago, Samantha was complaining of ear pain and was diagnosed with a bilateral ear infection. She was taken to the doctor where they prescribed antibiotics. The infection continued and a second round of antibiotics was prescribed without relief. After 4 visits to the doctor, a blood test was done which concluded that Samantha's blood level was dangerously low. She was sent to the ER at John Muir Walnut Creek for an immediate transfusion. Further tests were done including an abdominal CT that showed enlargement of the kidneys and liver. The following day a bone marrow aspiration was completed and the diagnoses was made on January 21st, 2016 that Samantha has leukemia, specifically ALL (acute lymphoblastic leukemia). We've started this page for friends and family to keep you all updated on Samantha's status. This will help Brittany and Zach spend important time with the health care team learning about Samantha's treatments, comprehending her disease, and guiding her through care. It will be helpful for everyone to coordinate care for meals, help with Julia and Trevor, and help wherever Brittany and Zach may need by contacting the main contacts listed below. Please invite friends and family to this page for information and coordination of all of the above and to help Brittany and Zach journey down this challenging road. Samantha is CURED, out of remission and 5 years cancer free today!! We are celebrating this milestone BIG TIME!!! However, this cancer journey will never be over, She will be monitored for the rest of her life. The aftercare focuses on the long term effect from the treatment. In fact just in the last 6 months she has had 11 X-Rays, 1 Bone Density Test, broken 3 bones (8 broken since end of treatment in 2018), many doctors visits, immunology specialists, multiple blood tests, enlarged heart and so on. BUT SAMANTHA IS CURED! So we celebrate this awesome life she gets to live!!!

3 Years CANCER FREE!!!! 3 years ago today, Samantha took her last chemo and we threw her a gigantic CANCER FREE PARTEE w all the green flare and 5,000 Chic-Fil-A nuggets!! Sam is living her best life and doing exceptionally well. Although she is not considered “cured” till she is 5 years cancer free, we are incredibly grateful and blessed for this life. We have learned how to roll w the punches and to celebrate the little things. (I had to post some photos to remind all of us how far we have come.) We continue to be incredibly grateful for our village who got us through our darkest days!

Today Samantha is ONE YEAR CANCER FREE!!!! She is braver, stronger and healthier!!

Samantha was 6 years old in Kindergarten when she was diagnosed w Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. Cancer became front and center in our lives..... it will never truly leave our minds...... but wow life has been so good to us this last year while being off treatment.

Samantha is now 9 and For those who have been asking about Her health....

She has been going to the hospital every 30 days for blood tests and check up w her Oncologist team. All blood tests have been clear. Her body is healing perfectly! She will now have blood tests/check up every 60 days!!

Samantha is kicking butt in 3rd
Grade and keeping up with her peers. She is playing her very first sport, Softball. She was able to walk 22 thousands steps a day during her 1st adventure to Disneyland. She is living her best life!

Thanks again to everyone for their constant love and support to our family over the last 3 years. “We are the LUCKIEST, of the Unlucky.” We are blessed!

Life is soooooooo good! And here are some pictures to remind us of a few highs and lows over the last 3 years. Look at her face and how incredibly far she has come!!!

Sam can hear!!! She had a little ear surgery today. Samantha has been struggling w ear pain, some loss of hearing and occasional dizziness from the chemo treatment and multiple ear infections. Turns out she had fluid, which turned into what they call Ear Glue behind her ear drum for the last 3 years.

So this morning Sam had the ‘Ear Glue’ scrapped out and tubes put in. She is soooo excited to be able to hear again!!

A quick health update... Samantha continues to get blood tests and check up every 30 days. She sees a dermatologist every 4 weeks for treatment - her skin infections are clearing up. She still experiences joint pain time to time- might start Physical Therapy. We started the revaccination process- she will receive a few shots every other month till she has all vaccinations again. She has worked really hard to catch up in school and is doing phenomenal in 3rd Grade!!

Life is Good!!!

The American Cancer Society invited Samantha and all of her Warrior (now SURVIVOR buddies) to be a part of their fashion show. I was more emotional about it than I thought I would be....i ugly cried, tears pouring when I saw my girls walk the run way. The room was full of cancer survivors. Julia was also invited to join as a sibling of a survivor. When I asked her if she wanted to walk with her sister, she said, “yes because I prayed to take the cancer away from Samantha and give it to me instead” ...... more tears.

In addition - I would like to say how proud I am of my friend Kristin Cosner. She was the Honoree of the day because of all of her hard work and dedication to Team G. She is making a difference in the lives of those affected by cancer. You are a hero to many Kris!!!!! I love you

Blood tests, check up, Crayon Initiative recipient, met with the generous owner of Chick-Fil-A Walnut Creek, a quick stop at the toy store to pick out 1,000 bath bombs to put in her Birthday bin and back to school by noon!!

She had to give a little extra blood today. We are testing to see if her body still has all the antibodies from the Vaccines she received as a baby/toddler. She will most likely need to get revaccinated.....better to be safe than get Polio or the Measles!!

After 11 weeks..... Samantha got her cast off and shes pretty darn stoked about it!!! She has to wear this brace for 3 weeks, but her arm is finally healed.

Last week Samantha had her monthly blood tests, every month her body is getting stronger!!

We also learned, Samantha will receive extra blood tests next month to see which vaccine antibodies are still working. After 2+ years of harsh chemo, the vaccines she was given as a young child, like Polio and Measles, are most likely not working. So we will have to start the process of revaccination soon.

But, Samantha continues to be cancer free living her best 3rd grade life!!!!!
