What do we do?
The Hyperthermia Cancer Institute (HCI) is the premiere center for thermal oncology. We specialize in hyperthermia treatment, a non-invasive treatment that heats cancerous tumors using ultrasound technology. At HCI, we use the Sonotherm 1000 machine. This machine uses ultrasound energy to heat tumors as deep as 10 cm within the body to approximately 109 F for about 45 minutes. This temperature is higher than a fever, but cooler than the hottest summer day in Los Angeles. The Hyperthermia Cancer Institute is one of only four centers nationwide that uses ultrasound waves for hyperthermia treatment.
Hyperthermia is shown to have significantly greater results when used in combination with radiation therapy and/or chemotherapy. Heat generated by hyperthermia can directly kill cancer cells and can enhance the ability of the body’s immune system to fight the cancer. Hyperthermia sensitizes cancer cells to radiation therapy, thereby making radiation treatments significantly more effective than radiation therapy alone. Heat also prevents cancer cells from repairing the cancer-damaging effects of radiation. The two therapies work together to fight the growing cancer cells.
Most patients experience little or no side effects during hyperthermia treatment.
We treat each patient based on their specific needs to enhance and optimize treatment results. HCI offers a friendly, calming environment with caring staff where patients can feel at home. Our experienced staff is dedicated to working with our patients and their families to provide the greatest benefits and care are during a challenging time.
